Besides MikeR suggestion it can depend on what font you have selected. If you have a font that doesn't have the shape it won't change. Finale has bugs for sure but this isn't one of them.
The lyric and text font is not being rendered correctly. What exactly does this mean? Can you post a sample. All the fonts I have tried work as expected in Finale.
First reboot the computer and restart Finale. Then reassign playback sounds. See what Human playback you have selected. It would also help if we knew what OS and Finale verson.
