I find I usually return to the GPO4 set for my string sounds under normal circumstances. There is something about the GPO5 set; perhaps they are better suited for more specialized use.

I concur. The o-shapes in the articulation menu do not affect (violin) playback either in MIDI or Aria playback.

Are entering notes in the score displayed in concert pitch (Document Menu) or a score with transposing instruments transposed?

This sounds like a job best assigned to a plug-in that an be assigned to a range of measures and then called with appriate parameters set by the user.
