That is not typical. What computer operating system do you use? You might try downloading the demo again. (Best not to use the Chrome browser for this.)
Richard, To help us help you, can you tell us how much experience you have using Finale? Also, please confirm that you are using full Finale rather than PrintMusic.
I imagine you have already tried restarting Finale. Have you tried rebooting your computer?
Personally, I would use Linked Parts and not extract except in unusual circumstances.
