 Hello!

I have a piano score which combines classical piano music style and pop rock stuff with chords. Sometimes I have the music written for both hands and sometimes I have just the right hand with chords and slash notation. How could I hide the left hand just when I have chords in the right hand? I have tried everything like to hide staffs or to force hide staff (when I do that it removes the full left hand of the document).

Thanks!

The following is basic stuff. It is important that you understand it.

You have the Staff Attributes, and you have custom staff styles.

Staff Attributes are “global” (= for all the measures in the entire document).

With a staff style you can “locally” override the Staff Attributes in a selected region.

To do so, first select the region, and then apply the staff style to the selected region.

(If the staff style was not already created, you must create the desired staff style first)

Thanks for your comment, Peter! I know how staff styles work. My doubt is not about staff style, it's about how to hide the left hand of the piano just sometimes in the same score. If there's nothing written on the left hand I want to hide it to save space and then after several measures make it appear again when there's music written for the left hand. Is there a way to do it?

Thanks!

You can do it on a system-by-system basis with the Staff tool, and "hide empty staves."

This means that you have to set up your score so that the empty measures span a full system.

Yes, you use the Hide (cutaway) staff style for the measures you want to hide..

But if you want to "automate" the process by using the Staff menu's Hide Empty Staves, then you have to create a custom grand staff using two individual staves and grouping them with a brace. Hide empty staves will not work with one staff of the default grand staff.

Not so, JAV!

If you go to Staff menu>Groups and brackets>Edit... you can change the When Hiding Empty setting to Hide Normally. Then, you can hide the bass or treble staff, as long as it's empty. Also, you might want to click the bracket option to "show if only on one staff."

The "cutaway" won't save any space if (for example) three measures in a system are empty, but the fourth is not.
