I have downloaded latest version of Finale, but files remain unable to open.  Program suggests going to the App Store to find a program that will open EXEC files.  I just need to open these files long enough to print hard copies for instrumentalists to play from.  They were saved as pdfs, but now have a PTS or SCO suffix attached.  I thought newer versions of Finale files were able to open all older versions as well?

What happens if you change the suffix? Have you opened a support ticket?

Finale does not support the import of pdf files and never has.

You will need a special program like Smart Score if you want to open PDF's in Finale.

To open/import a PDF file created from a Finale document you could also try PDFtoMusic Pro from Myriad Software.

PDFtoMusic Pro will work better than optical scanning programs.

This is because PDFtoMusic Pro knows things that an OCR program can't know.

For instance, PDFtoMusic Pro knows

- that staff lines really are drawn as lines,

- that a notehead is a musical font character, rather than trying to determine a notehead from a bunch of dark pixels on a page.

This is much more accurate than optical scanning for PDFs created by a notation program like Finale.

Optical scanners have to figure out where staff lines and noteheads are from the dots on a page, which is more error-prone.

The flip side is that PDFtoMusic Pro cannot handle optical scans from a scanner at all.
