lines of notes positioned vertically in one bar

How do I vertically overlay notes within a bar to form one line of music against another in counterpoint? I've tried and it won't let me enter more than the allotted number of beats per measure.

I suspect you need to use layers. The tutorials will show you how to use this very basic Finale function.

If you can post a screenshot of what you want, I’m sure we can give you a more specific answer.

Please add the program and version you are using to your signature, in the control panel.

Normally you would put each part in its own, separate staff.

To have two parts in the same staff, use layers.

Enter the upper part in Layer 1, the lower part in Layer 2.
