In the Special Tools palette, there is a dot moving tool (which it sounds like you know about.) You can either move the dot off the page, or drag it on top of another dot or a solid notehead.
I guess it's possible that the font was remapped, but the documentation wasn't updated. It wouldn't be the first time that documentation was wrong.
