In order to use Finale's Human Playback with Garritan Personal Orchestra 5, you need to configure Human Playback Preferences to adhere to the appropriate techniques.
If you haven't already done so, please begin by following these steps to integrate GPO 5 with Finale’s Score Manager.
Choose your version of Finale to continue:
In Finale (Version 25), the default Human Playback preferences are written to include the preferences necessary to use the Garritan Personal Orchestra 5 library. No further steps should be necessary. If you are still running into issues, please feel free to contact Customer Success.
Mac
- Quit Finale.
- Download "GPO5HPPreferencesMac.zip" from the bottom of this article.
- Locate the downloaded folder and double-click it to extract its contents.
- Double-click the "GPO5PreferencesInstaller" that appears.
- You will receive a message saying that your GPO 5 Preferences have been installed successfully when the process is complete.
Windows
- Exit Finale.
- Download the "GPO5HPPreferencesWin.zip" folder at the bottom of this article. Choose Open with: and choose Windows Explorer from the drop-down menu, and click OK.
- In the new window that appears, double-click "GPO5HPPrefenceInstaller" (the type should be Application).
- Choose Extract All.
- In the Extract Compressed (Zipped) Folders that appears click the Extract button.
- In the next window that appears, double-click "GPO5HPPPreferenceInstaller" to run it.
- You will receive a message saying your GPO 5 preferences have been installed successfully when the process is complete.
Note: If you receive a message saying that the program might not have installed properly, you can ignore this and click Cancel.
Mac
- Quit Finale.
- Download the attached file GPO5Prefs.txt and open it in a text editor such as TextEdit.
- In TextEdit, choose Edit > Select All and Edit > Copy. Quit TextEdit.
- In Finder, press SHIFT+COMMAND+G to open the Go To Folder dialog box.
- Type “~/Library/Application Support/MakeMusic/Finale 2014/Configuration Files” (without quotation marks) and press RETURN.
- CONTROL+click (or right-click) the file preferences.humanplayback.xml and choose Open With > TextEdit.
- Scroll to the bottom of the file and click to place your cursor after the final instance of “</container>” in the file. Press RETURN once.
- With your cursor in the new space, choose Edit > Paste.

Windows
- Exit Finale.
- Download the attached file GPO5Prefs.txt and open it in a text editor such as Notepad.
- In Notepad, choose Edit > Select All and Edit > Copy. Exit Notepad.
- Press the WINDOWS key+R to open the Run dialog box.
- Type “%appdata%\MakeMusic\Finale 2014\Configuration Files” (without quotation marks) and click OK.
- Right-click the file preferences.humanplayback.xml and choose Open With > Notepad.
- Scroll to the bottom of the file and click to place your cursor after the final instance of “</container>” in the file. Press ENTER once.
- With your cursor in the new space, choose Edit > Paste.

Finale’s Human Playback Preferences now include techniques for GPO 5.
You must manually add GPO 5 techniques to the Human Playback Preferences dialog box. You can find more information about this dialog box from the Finale 2012 user manuals for both Mac and Windows. You can also find information on instrument-specific controllers and keyswitches from the GPO5 Manual.
