With the development of Finale (Version 25) there have been some key changes to the printing functionality on Mac that may present a change in workflow to the Finale for Mac user. To help - here are some checkpoints to make sure that all of your bases have been covered for printing your finalized scores...
Make sure that your document is sized how you want it in Finale before doign anything else. You can control this with the Page Layout tool. Please pay mind to the values of the last three options of the Page Layout menu - Page Size, Resize Pages (Page Reduction), Resize Staff Systems (System Reduction). These values will determine the majority of page formatting for your score.
Using File > Page Setup determine that the values in this dialog box correctly define the sheet of paper on which you wish your score to be printed. For example, if you want your 8.5 x 11 score to be printed as one page, set the values in this dialog box to define an 8.5 x 11, portrait-oriented sheet of paper. If you want two 8.5 x 11 pages on a single sheet, set your page setup values to define an 11 x 17 landscape sheet of paper.
In the Page Setup dialog box, you can define custom page sizing using the Manage Custom Page Sizes option in the Page Size drop-down menu. In this dialog box, be sure that your four margin values that define the printable area allow enough space for your document to print on the sheet and that one value is not much higher than the others. This will avoid your score being shifted on the printed sheet. If you don't know where to start, try .11 (if you're using inches) all around.
In the Print dialog box itself, make sure that all of the correct options are selected for your finished result. If you want to print with two score pages on a larger sheet (exemplified with the 11 x 17 page setup above) make sure to use the 2-up option. If you are trying to print a linked part and not the score, be sure to choose those parts/score in the window in the middle of the dialog box. If you are printing multiple copies, be sure to set the value in the Copies field at the top of the dialog box.
In the event of some unexpected results
Q: What do I do if my score is still shifting upward or around on the printed sheet and I am not using a custom page size?
A: If you notice that the printed result has shifted your score at all, make sure that you have a physical printer (even if you are not using it right now) configured in the Printers & Scanners section of System Preferences if you do have a physical printer at your disposal. If you do, and are still seeing this issue, try removing and re-adding the printer and then restarting Finale. In some cases, Apple's printing functions need to see that type of printer to avoid a margin issue.
Q: What do I do if I see odd font characters where I indicated special noteheads in my score?
A: If you see odd characters where you have indicated special or blank noteheads, reopen your score and use the Note Shape tool from the Special Tools palette to choose a font character that does not have a unicode replacement. You can see the unicode value for the character in the lower left-hand corner of the window when choosing a symbol.
Q: What do I do if the majority of the items in my score all show up incorrect, or are replaced with FFF (fortisissimo) markings?
A: In the even you are having troubles with a music font or any font displaying incorrectly, please make sure that you have the font installed properly and then check to make sure that you are printing to a locally connected printer. In some cases printers connected over a network can swap fonts when printing. If this seems to be happening try printing to PDF and then printing that PDF to your printer.
