If you installed Garritan sound samples on an external drive, you can use those samples with a new or reformatted computer without duplicating files. However, you will need to go through the motions of reinstalling the library on the new computer to ensure the ARIA Player or CFX Concert Grand Player can locate the samples on your external drive.
The Essentials
To get your library up and running on a new system, keep these two rules in mind:
- Installing only the player is not enough: Simply installing the standalone player app (ARIA Player or CFX Concert Grand Player) will not make your library appear.
- Run the Library Installer: You must run the specific installer for your library (e.g., Garritan Personal Orchestra). This process is necessary to write the registry/plist files that tell your computer where the samples are and to handle software activation. For a full walkthrough of this process, see our guide on Downloading, Installing, and Activating Garritan Libraries.
Step-by-Step Installation Guide
When you run the library installer on your new computer, you will encounter two different location prompts. This is the standard method for installing Garritan libraries on a separate drive. It is important to distinguish between these two prompts:
Windows Instructions
-
The Application Location
- Prompt: "Select Destination Location"
- Action: Leave this as the default path on your primary (C:) drive.
- Example: C:\Program Files\Garritan\Jazz and Big Band 3
-
The Sample Content Location
- Prompt: "Select your Samples directory"
- Action: Click Browse, navigate to your external drive, and select the existing [NAME]_Samples folder already located there.
Mac Instructions
-
The Application Location
- Prompt: "Destination Select"
- Action: Select your primary system drive (usually Macintosh HD).
-
The Sample Content Location
- Prompt: "Select the destination folder for the samples."
- Action: Navigate to your external drive and select the existing [NAME]_Samples folder.
Important: Will I lose my data?
No. When you point the installer to an existing sample folder, it will "go through the motions" of installation to ensure all system paths are correctly registered. However, the installer is designed to recognize existing files; it will not duplicate, overwrite, or delete your existing samples.
Note: Once the installation is complete, you will still need to perform a one-time activation (usually by dragging your activation MIDI keycard onto the player) to authorize the library on the new machine. Detailed activation steps can be found here.
