I was going to use a more vacuum-oriented word in the title, but restrained.

No way to send a private message.

No signature, where you can post your computer and program specs. We are advised to write them in, every time.

Editing a post is almost impossible, at least on my iPad.

No way to easily identify new posts.

No way to see who posted last, without scrolling through the thread.

No way to search posts. There are many redundant threads. It's hard to believe that they are going to phase out the old forum for this poorly thought out garbage.

This is isn't as bad as so-called "help" files that you have to enter and exit to try and find what you need once you enter a search term. Far more time consuming and infinitely more frustrating than a searchable .pdf file.

No wonder more and more people are using Sibelius

You can search this forum easily using the search box at the top of this screen.

Since Mike Rosen first posted,

  1. Users can now fill out a profile (via your name pull-down at the top of this screen) and other users can access it by clicking on the poster name in each post.
  2. One can edit one's own posts via the Post options pull-down to the right. (Not sure how that works on an iPad.)
  3. Posts are now sorted from most recent to least recent based on latest Comment rather than the original's posting date/time.
  4. Mike is still correct that one cannot see the author of the most recent comment without opening the post. I don't know how often I've opened one to see that I was, and felt I had wasted a bit of my time.

I'm not sure I've seen any statistics that Finale is losing users to Sibelius, and I wonder a little if anyone is (or about anyone who is) switching solely due to a change in user forums. Really?!

Of course it's not JUST  to do with the forum - but it's just another area we are losing ground to the opposition. I know they have a far better help centre and communication with users - most of my friends in the UK use Sibelius. I have sent of at least a dozen questions/problems over the years to the support centre - NOT ONE issue has ever been resolved to my satisfaction.

Uh... nearly everybody in the U.K. and Ireland uses Sibelius as it is used in the schools. when my daughter went to school there, she felt alone as a Finale user—this was 11 years ago.

Most of us long term Finale users made the decision years ago on Sibelius.

I dont believe this new forum, as bad as it is, will really drive Finale users away. This forum is pretty bad, though... the old one is now locked but www.finaleforum.com is open. It is heavily ad supported but I don't mind.

For me, the lack of a manual since 2012 is a big issue. The online Help files are slow, cumbersome and often incorrect by comparison. That, combined with no more phone support will make me reconsider ever upgrading again. Give me a searchable .pdf manual, please.

For others, the loss of the Movie window will drive them away. Notion and Overture are doing their best to win those customers. We'll see...

Hopefully, MM will fix the Win10 upgrade issue. It's not going away by itself. As a Mac user, it doesn't affect me but still...

I agree with you about the manual: online help is difficult to use, and Finale over the years has had difficulty keeping it up to date, putting expiration dates on instructions that apply only to older products, although they have gotten better on this in recent years,

But to be fair, Dorico initiates are scrambling even more than Finale users to figure out how to do things in Dorico, since their PDF and online manuals are (perhaps inexplicably) more primitive than Finale's, and their software is changing more rapidly in this phase of their development. I think one of the reasons for the MM Staff's increased presence here and on the Features Forum is the stellar job Daniel and his team have been doing monitoring the Dorico Forum. Competition is good.

I miss some of the long-time really experienced users from the old forum.

It's the lack of ability to post a sample that seems to be the big one for me...   Before, I could put up a slice of a piece that demonstrated the problem, and it would/could be downloaded by severall others, at least one of whom would soon post a solution, and often a corrected version!

Can't do that here...   I've had Dropbox suggested as a replacement, but you need to grant permission to potential downloaders before they can check your problem out..

C'mon over! A lot of the old gang is there, and you can post files.

You can post a .jpg or .png file. I've done it. Yes, the inability to post a .musx is one of the things that makes this site a poor excuse for a serious forum.

Dorico is flat out not ready for prime time. Like MuseScore and Lily Pond, it's for engraving hobbyists and they are welcome to it. When that changes for Dorico, I might check it out again. Till then, I'll stick to programs that allow you to write music with some degree of speed—and none of those three can be taken seriously. That could change for Dorico—wake me up if it does.

With Dropbox you can create a link to a folder that lets folks read your work but not change the dropbox version (you can also give them full read/write access to the folder, but that's a different matter). So you can use Dropbox to let others see your actual file, but they might have to use their own Dropbox to get a corrected version back to you.

And just to be clear, I recommend the Dorico Forum software. That is not the same as suggesting a preference for Dorico over Finale. As Mike H has said, DOrico is not yet production ready for most purposes.

Public folders in DropBox are going away soon. I'm not sure what that really means for the future. This is supposed to happen in March.
