I have the latest version (Fin 25), and have been running it without major problems for a month or so.  I have noticed at times a screen would come up, announcing a "problem". This screen is designed to vanish as soon as it appears, so it's impossible to read in full. The program would restart, and, if I'm lucky, the option pops up for me to retrieve the ASV file, which is quite close to what I had when the program died, so it is a minor annoyance, usually.

Well, it would seem that Fin has upped the ante.  I went to use the Mf function, which operates things such as your tempo markings, dynamics, variations in speed, rehearsal markings, etc.  This is a really big subsection.

I click on Mf and all the Mf-related handles appear, just as they should.

However, when I click on anything, a location in a measure where I wish to work, or if I attempt to click on one of the Mf handles, A window pops up, announcing that Finale has encountered an error and must shut down. This window immediately vanishes.

A strange window with enigmatic messages in it appears and then vanishes, so it is impossible to retain it in any case (what the hey is it with all these windows that pop up to show finale is doing something, but then they instantly vanish so they are utterly useless???).

Fin restarts.  I get a window requiring that I choose to open the ASV file as my operating file, or discard it.

I've encountered problems like this before, and usually restarting Fin fixes the problem. Sometimes a cold boot is required, but that fixes thing. I rebooted my system. Same problem. I repeatedly tried different things.  The problem isn't limited to one file.  Any file I open seems to have the same problem.

I uninstalled Finale and reinstalled.  I still have the problem, however, I now notice that I seem not to have a folder for the newest version, Finale25.

In addition I can't find the new Finale(dot)exe file at all.

This has me wondering if the reinstall process is flawed, or that there is not actually a new version of Finale, but another version of Finale2014(point)whatever.

I am now looking at the possibility of manually deleting all of the old Finale, since the uninstall (as Looooong as it is) might not be getting the job done.

I have to say that I am skeptical of suggestions that this is a system problem, since no other program has given me any difficulties at all for several years. Finale is the only thing which consistently has become unstable with no warning.

Since Fin is idiosyncratic, I would like to know the precise steps I need to take to assure (which is a bit different from "Gosh, it seems this ought to work") that all old files are removed, and all files are newly installed.  It seems that whatever glitch I had has wondered across to my newly reinstalled Fin, so this seems a likely consideration, before I reinstall my operating system (which works flawlessly with all other programs except Fin)

I appreciate any assistance.

Hi James!

You're referring to the Expression Tool, correct? What version of Windows are you using? I agree that a clean uninstall and reinstall is a good idea. When uninstalling Finale v25, one important detail to note is any folders that historically contained a version number in their name now just say "Finale".

1. You will need to be logged in to this computer on a user account that has full administrative rights.
2. Exit Finale and any other open programs but this browser.
3. Open the Control Panel...
Windows 7: Choose Control Panel from the Start menu.
Windows 8 and 10: Hold down your Windows key and press the letter X to open the Control Panel.

4. In the Control Panel, choose Programs > Uninstall a program.
5. In your Programs and Features list, right-click on Finale, and then choose Uninstall.
6. Hold down the Windows key and press the letter R to open the Run dialog box.
7. Type "C:\Program Files" without quotation marks and click OK.
8. Find and delete the "Finale" folder. (If you have any personal files saved here, be sure to remove them first.)
9. Press the Windows key + R to reopen the Run dialog box.
10. Type "%appdata%" and click OK.
11. Open the "MakeMusic" folder, then delete the "Finale" folder.

I'd also recommend clearing your temp folder:

12. Press the Windows key + R to reopen the Run dialog box.
13. Type "%temp%" and click OK.
14. Press CTRL+A to select all items, then press DELETE
(There may be a handful of items you cannot delete, so if click Skip if you're notified that you can't delete something.)
15. Empty the Recycle Bin.
16. Restart the computer.
17. Re-install Finale by downloading it from your MakeMusic account.

Please let us know how it goes (and what version of Windows you're using)! If we're still not having success, then we may want to open a support ticket to get you some more personalized attention.

Chad, James never tells us, but I suspect he is on a Mac, which might explain his troubles with the expressions panel, depending on his OS. I hope more people will take advantage of (and be encouraged to use) the new shared profiles to log their Finale version and Computer OS.
