I need to show when to strum down the guitar and when to strum up. You get a different sound from the same fingering. Basically, the root is different - even if the same note, its a different pitch. And when the same chord is strummed in different directions it sounds different. Is there any way to do this from the staff OR the fret boards ? I'm not a student, but it would be useful for guitar teachers with beginning students.
Hi Lou,
We actually put out a blog article a couple of years ago which addresses this one. Take a look here for some additional info!

While traditional music notation doesn't indicate strumming direction, there are ways to clarify it. Using arrows above or below the staff, downward (∇) for down strums and upward (∆) for up strums, helps show the pattern. Alternatively, tablature (tab) can be annotated with symbols: (/) for down strums and () for up strums.
