I want to change my time signature and then have notes shifted to different measures as needed.  For example if I have 4 measures at 3/4 time and I changed it to 4/4 time I would now have 3 measures with all 4 notes entered.  And of course I want to be able to go the other way too.  Take 3 measures in 4/4 time and create 4 measures in 3/4 time.

Is there anyway to do this?  The plug-ins for merge and split measure seem like a start but it looks like they only work on a limited number of measures and aren't tied to the time signature changes.

1. Select the measure region where you need to change the time signature (in your example 4 measures at 3/4 time).

2. Time Signature Tool. Doubled-click the selected region.

The dialog box Time Signature appears, and it shows what region that is selected.

3. Change the time signature as needed (in your example increase the Number of Beats by 1, from 3 to 4).

4. Select the option “Rebar Music”.

5. Click “OK”.

Finale will not delete any measures.

After the above steps you still have 4 measures, but now the last measure is empty - since all the entries can fit into only 3 measures.

If you go “the other way” - take 3 measures in 4/4 time and change to 3/4 time - then Finale will not delete any entries.

You will still have all the entries; Finale will automatically create an extra measure, to make room for the entries.

Hi Peter. I did as you instructed, and the notes all fell perfectly. But, the chords that were over the old part now are added to the measures after the Time Signature change. I had a saved version of the document, so I knew which chords to delete, but is there any way to do this so the chords aren't added?

I hope I made this clear! Lol!

Delete the chords beforehand? Then, re-enter them.

What Mike said.

Chords in all recent versions of Finale are "beat attached," not "note attached."
