Mac OS X Yosemite 10.10.5

I am getting back into music after a long hiatus.  My old versions of Finale (full size) are no longer usable: I'm trying Notepad, and can't get the number of measures per line the way I want them.  I can't get verses separated from the chorus.  I am not writing a concert, just simple sheet music for guitar & flute for church.  How do I separate the parts, put in double bars, etc?  Do I need to upgrade?  What I've been able to find on line doesn't seem to indicate the paid versions will fix this.
