I'm currently using Finale 2014d.v5545 on Sierra, I upgraded to Sierra a few months ago and it hasn't given me any problems until today. I can't add or change any notes on the staff in any of my existing files, regardless of whether I started working on them before or after upgrading to Sierra. I can create a new document and it works fine, but I can't continue working on anything I've already saved. If I try to, finale crashes. I've tried restarting finale, restarting my computer, and "extracting" the score to see if it works as a new file, but I can't add notes unless I create a new default document, and once I save those and reopen them, it gives me the same problem.

Try exporting as MusicXML, then import into a new document.

This is a guess but it appears to me that you do not have permission to write to your old file—it could be that the directory is locked.

Try the following: Move the file to your desktop. Does it move or copy over? Can you save changes after you've moved it?

Hi Beth,

Just curious, are you on the fourth maintenance update of Sierra (10.12.4)? If so, you may be running into an old incompatibility that has returned, namely that using certain tools can crash Finale; see this knowledge base article for more information: Finale products and macOS Sierra 10.12.

This seems a little odd since the issue appear to be file-specific, but I wanted to let you know about that in case it was the issue. You can, of course, upgrade to the latest update in the Finale 2014 series, Finale 2014.5, to see if that helps; however, please note (mentioned in the same article) the problems with palette resizing in 2014.5 on Sierra.

Both of these issues have been resolved in our latest version of Finale, Finale v25.

Hope this helps!

I am experiencing similar issues with v25, I only downloaded Finale a few weeks ago and this is the first time when trying to input notes that Finale crashes, I can input other characters such as expression or smart shapes, it's only with note input that this comes up. I just installed the macOS High Sierra 10.13.3 update today to maybe see if this is the issue.

If you've not updated, 25 to 25.5 yet, make certain to do so. It resolves some High Sierra issues.

I recommend a Safe Boot after the HS upgrade. Boot while holding the Shift key and log into your User Account when prompted. After your desktop icons are rebuilt, reboot normally. Don't try to run apps in Safe mode as most will not work. This process takes a lot longer than a normal boot so be patient—it will finish.

Safe Boot restores your caches to default and reestablishes any corrupted system paths. A normal symptom of needing this is that some Alias icons are generic. I maintain over 30 Macs and have had to do this on every one after the initial HS instal. I've not had to do it again after updates, though. On some systems, it restores alias icons only; on others, it fixed a number of annoying issues. YMMV

There are many who prefer running updates from the Combo Updater. If having problems, I recommend doing it over the App Store update.
