I am on a PC using Finale Notepad. I have the above issue where some measures are very "squishy" like the first two and others are spaced nicely.  I also have multiple grace notes that I want to enter between notes in a measure but in some cases there is not enough room. Can someone please explain how I can change the measure sizes.

By upgrading to PrintMusic or Finale.

NotePad has no page setup or measure alteration capabilities. It's fine for Mary Had a Little Lamb, but you really should consider upgrading for the extra features.

On the other hand, I'm not really sure what's causing the issue. When I entered the notes in NP2012, this is what I got:

Thank you for your response. I am an amateur musician that might use this product 3 or 4 times per year. It isn't cost effective for me to upgrade to a paid product. I'll just deal with squishy notes. :)

I think yours isn't squishy because you don't have the rest of the song - just the couple measures. I also wonder if it is the order that I entered the parts in as well. I started with the Cello 1 line which is basically quarter notes and half notes. Perhaps the software determined the spacing from that. No worries.

Thank you for your reply.

That's possible, although I hadn't considered it. Just for fun, try entering the most crowded measures first, and see if it makes a difference.

Found a solution!!!

I just cut and paste the squishy measures back into the same place and it resized appropriately.

Glad you found a way to make it work. Since the behavior you described is not normal, it would be great to know that OS version you are using.

I certainly understand saving money where one can but sometimes, ya have to ask, "What's my time worth?" Here's a comparison chart showing the current Finale products:

Those doing lead lead sheets that don't require a second verse or uncomplicated instrumental pieces can often get a lot done in Notepad. My user account shows many older versions — I used to make my students download it so that I could email lesson follow up.
