Garritan World Instruments (GWI) categorizes certain instruments, where variants of the same or similar instruments with different names cross geographic lines, in unexpected locations.

I imagine this would carry over to GWI sounds borrowed for the included GIfF set.

I enclose some jpegs .In Perc Layout Designer you can see no midi not has been assigned to this sound? How to correct this/

Bad news. Sorry. Finale does not always set up all listed percussion sounds automatically. Some sounds you must add yourself. (I don't like it any more than I think you will, but there it is, even when the sound is in the included Finale Garritan Library.)

To alter Percussion Maps and Layouts, start by checking out the following:

You need to understand Percussion MIDI Maps, used to assign a specific sound to a percussion sound name by MIDI number.

Since your Temple Blocks are in italics, it means you need to edit your percussion Map to pair the Temple Blocks name with a MIDI number. Since there are multiple (5 usually) Temple Blocks, you may need to assign multiple MIDI numbers to multiple, uniquely named blocks: Temple Block, Temple Block(2), Temple Block(3), Temple Block(4), Temple Block(5) available under World Music (do you own Garritan World Instruments?)

You also need to understand Percussion Layouts, used to assign a specific percussion sound name from the Map to a staff location and notehead shape.

This process is not without its complications. The (much) older one-screen system was simpler to understand but less flexible.

Thanks Adrian this is very helpful. I think I am understanding it .Can I ask a question? I am in Perc Map Editor ;I have found that the Chinese Perc is in World 2 and I have added Temple Block ( as you say there are several but I thought I would start with trying to get one to work).I 've added it but how do I know what NUMBER to assign to it? As you can see it is assigned 0 at the moment.

As I understand it, the MIDI note is to allow entry from a MIDI keyboard. If you enter the notes from a QWERTY keyboard or with the mouse, is it needed?

Another problem that I have with percussion is that Finale lists (what seems like) every instrument in creation. But they don't all exist in your sound files. I have ofter wished that there was a way for the program to indicate that a particular sound was (or wasn't) available to you, on your computer. Different color, check mark, etc.

The keyboard equivalents for Temple Blocks are on page 101 of the Garritan manual for GWI. You need to convert keyboard letter names to MIDI numbers to enter into your percussion map. IIRC Middle C (which is either C3 or C4, depending on who defines it) is MIDI 62. My copy of Finale automatically set Temple Block at MIDI 36 (which = A#), which would imply that the Garritan manual is using C4 for Middle C.

Sussing out the MIDI value for the various percussion sounds is, for me, the most tedious part of the process. But actually, when asking for a Temple Block on its own staff, the program did find the correct sound (which is more than it does when I ask for Claves). That might be another way to find a usable MIDI number--ask for the sound on a separate staff just to get the MIDI number before deleting sta staff later.

First big thanks to Mike and Adrian -I now know more than I did ,but somethings still puzzle me! Adrian your photo shows Gongs G5-C6 , but if you scroll down it then shows gongs as C2-D4 See my jpeg. So I think OK G5 should be midi No 79? but it  sounds nothing like a gong .So then I try to find the gongs on my jpeg  -cant find them in ethnic perc World 2 ?, but try gong midi note 36 -still no gong sounds .So I do understand I think how it should work but I am not quite there. Thanks so much for your patience so far , you have helped me a lot.

First off (throwing my hands in the air and laughing) you know I didn't write the Garritan manual(s), so I can't explain them. Looking in the Aria player, the Chinese Gongs seem to stretch from the C below middle C to the D two octaves and a step above. The setup wizard on my machine did not set this up automatically, but I am not surprised--see reference to claves in my previous post.

I have found percussion one of the more confusing, labor intensive areas of Finale/Garritan. Without the manuals, I would be lost. Even with them, setting up maps and layouts takes a while; but it does allow a lot of customization. I'll be interested to see what the competition comes up with and how that evolves, since it is bound to prompt Finale to take another look at this area.

Adrian , This is my first attempt to use Finale to write for Chinese instruments and Chinese percussion , so this is really confusing for me! Like I say I now more a lot more about percussion maps from you than I did before , so thanks so much for your help. I will certain post something here if I ever successfully solve the problem!

If I want the Chinese instruments then I have to buy the Garittan World instrument package. Otherwise when I pick an instrument from the list in Finale it just automatically links to the nearest sound it can find from the above list.

So I think the reason I have all the African instruments is because most jazz people would need those for Latin rhythms etc. so Finale have included those as extras.
