I have been using finale since 1993. Had absolutely no trouble with Finale 2012 and 2014. Recently I upgraded to Finale 25.4 (because of the improvements offered)

With Finale 25.4, suddenly I started getting problems with one specific score I'm working on, a cello concerto comissioned to me by a friend (which is already overdue).

This particular score gets slow, slaggy and "freeze" specially around measure 90 to 100, while scrolling up and down in scroll view, and also while scrolling forward or backwars through the score (also in scroll view). After a while, finale seems to recover, but If I keep scrolling more after the first slags, finally gets crazy. The windows start blinking, i get "finale is not responding"notifications (on the task manager) , and then finale freezes on a blank window. Then I force it off and then I ca'nt restart finale unless I restart the pc. On this file I have noticed other issues, it sometimes slags when loading the GPO instruments, and it takes longer than usual to save the file (when i save). The funny thing is I have not playback issues with this file.

It seems also weird that when scrolling forward or backward (in scroll view) on the first measures of my cello concerto, finale works perfectly. The problem always happens when reaching around measure 90 to100.

While working on other large orchestra files and other smaller files (piano solo files) this doesnt happen. Other files seem to be working allright. I also created a new document and transferred (copied) the cello concerto to this new file, and this did not to fix the issues. It seems that whatever damages this cello concerto files has, the damages are transfered to a new file.

I have taken some measures with my PC. I have analyzed, optimazed and defragmented my hard drive, I have cleaned my registry, erased trash, and unnecessary files and applications. I am so frustrated I am considering reinstalling windows or maybe upgrading to windows 8, but that would be painful, having to re-install other applications I use. Tried to make a system restore but my PC wont let me restore to and older date.

Any suggestions are welcome.

I suspect that part of the problem is Windows 7. Since it is 32-bit, and F 25 is 64-bit, there might be an issue.

However, others have mentioned slowdowns, as well. You might try more frequent restarts of the app. And, send the crash logs in to MM tech support.

There is a 64bit version of Win7. Without that, 25 will not run. But do submit a support case through the Submit a request link.

Any chance that you are using a 4K Monitor? If so, you want to mention that. It's been an issue for some Mac users but I have no idea if it affects Windows.

Jorge must have the 64-bit Windows 7 running. Otherwise he would not ever reach measure 90.

Isn't there something about smartshapes that can cause problems on occasion? I have never had this problem, so I do not remember clearly what effect that has.

Jorge,

As a long-time Finale user with a deadline project of importance, you should not be shy about using the "Submit a request" link at the top of this page to contact MM Support directly. I have found them very responsive and helpful.

PROBLEM SOLVED! Thank you so much for all your comments. You might laugh at this, but I actually solved the problem today a few hours after writing and submiting my case here.

I guess the file I was working with was somehow corrupted or damaged (thank God it was the file and not my PC or my operating system).

This is what I did to fix the problem:

I opened a cello concerto template I had created a few months ago (had no reasons to believe that template had any problems) and copied the musical elements of the troublesome file into the older concerto template. But I was careful not to copy directly the area of measures where I suspected there was a "corruption" or some kind of flaw (around measure 90-100). Instead, I wrote those measures note by note. Then I copied and pasted the rest of the concert (the whole first movement has 455 measures). That did it. This new file is not slagging or crashing at all.

I was able to finish that first movement today, so my friend already has a good audio demo of the concerto, along with the cello part.

Just to answer some of your questions, Mike, I have an ASUS PB278q 27"professional monitor. ¿How do I know how many K does it have?Yes I do have 64-bit Windows. Adrian, I suspect my problem might have had something to do with smart shapes, or maybe something about the way I copy and paste some of my music. Im not sure. Adrian, yes I was about to submit a request (I have done it in the past), and yes I know they are very responsive. But I wanted to try that last idea I had today.

Thank you so much guys!

If it was a 4K monitor, it would be advertised as such and you would know.

Glad you got it fixed.
