Wow-- what a blow this morning to find out that I cannot upgrade my Mac OS and still use my version of Finale. I took the $99 upgrade offer and only then found out that it is not possible to import a scanned file (PDF or TFF). I play the piano for a group of singers and we do shows as rest homes and seniors centers. This is a volunteer gig. Many of our songs are oldies and often in public domain, but not all. We buy sheet music and then often need to transpose it. Typing in the sheet music score is very tedious so the import function was a lifesaver. I understand the copyright issue but we are not using bootlegged music. We are paying for it but just need a version that has a vocal range that suits our singers.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to accomplish this? Or should I just give up on the upgrade. As it stands, Finale is useless for my purposes.

Janet, you're not the first to run into this. Blame the lawyers.

You won't like the answer, but...

You will have to purchase a version of SmartScore Pro (or some other music OCR program.) You can purchase it at half price from Musitek. Decide on the version that will suit you and your budget. On the good side, though, if you have been using the SmartScore Lite version that used to be packaged with Finale, you will be MUCH happier with the pro version. After learning the program (and there is a learning curve) you will find that being able to edit any errors out before bringing it into Finale is a great timesaver. I have used it on hundreds of scores, from a simple one-line lead sheet, to 8 choral parts and two pianos. Trust me, you won't be sorry!

I wish I could offer better (cheaper) suggestions, but that's the way it is. Oh: DO NOT think you can cheap out, and buy their Music-to-XML program. It's nothing more than the SmartScore Lite you have used.

If you have any questions, I'll be happy to help if I can. You can email me at wawoodman at aol dot com.

Thank you! Not great (affordable) news but the truth is what I need as this point. I have already invested several hundred dollars and have nothing useful (for my situation) to show for it! I can see that my singers are getting older and it is becoming harder to hit those high notes . . . so being able to transpose is becoming an issue. I don't think I will ever have the skills to do this on the fly so that means I need a software solution. I really appreciate your prompt reply. Thanks.

You're quite welcome. If you send me an email to the address I noted above, we can communicate directly. I'll even give you my phone number, if you like.

I know what you mean about the singers. If yours actually ADMIT they can't hit the high notes anymore, you're well ahead of the game!!

unbelievable....same frustration...just upgraded to V25, out of necessity for MAC users, and not happy about importing files. I used this function a lot in previous Finale software products.

Kathleen,

The loss of the scanning function, poor as it was, is a problem for many people. My best (only) suggestion is that you invest the money and learning time for SmartScore X2 Pro. As a Finale user, you can buy it at half price.

My email address is in a previous post. I will be happy to discuss it with you!

...and it was/is pretty bad in SmartScore Lite. I upgraded to SmartScore Pro in 2009 and upgraded to SmartScore X2 Pro in 2011 so that I wouldn't have to deal with SSL.

BTW, this was well publicised in a series of emails that we should all have received last year when 25 was released.

Music-to-XML™ is the app that was supposed to ship with Finale but got pulled because the lawyers said so. Now Musitek sells it separately for $99.95. There's no demo but Musitek will convert a file in pre-sales.

http://www.musitek.com/m2xml.html

Caveats: It's a "black box" in that there's no editing until you import it into your notation app (can be any that supports MusicXML import) . Scan in — .xml out. The upgrade price to SmartScore X2 Pro is $199.00 if you need more functionality.

SmartScore X2 Pro is $199 to registered Finale owners. Log in, go to Recommended Products. Saves you the $99.95 for Music-to-XML™

and there's a demo:

Use Image Capture.app (in your Applications Folder) to scan into a Mac. SmartScore X2 Pro has outdated instructions that assume a PPC. TWAIN drivers became obsolete in OS 10.6.

SmartScore X2 Pro and Image Capture.app work well in OS 10.13 High Sierra.
