 Windows 7  Finale 25.3.0.276

When I need to create a measure region that starts with anything except m. 1, it will not display an alternate measure number.

eg: I need m. 15-31 to be displayed as 23-39. When I add a measure region, it only displays m. 15-31 as 15-31, even though I set the starting number to 23.

What does your Measure Regions box look like?

Measure region 1 always works fine. It's when I add a region is where I have the problem. In your example, my region 2 would read

"measure 6 to 9999--Display As. 6 to 9999"

I can't get the display to change, even though I change the starting number.

Are you changing the ending number of region 1? I have made that mistake myself, on occasion.

@Kathleen,

Can you show us a screen shot of your misbehaving Measure Number panel?

Can we see what it shows with Region 2 highlighted?

The function seems to be doing what you ask. You told it to start region 2 at measure three and begin that number sequence with the number 3, which will appear as if you have not created a second region at all. So I hope you will understand why I am puzzled.

Can I ask why you are creating a second region? Would simply marking a measure not to count in the numbering have accomplished what you wanted?

Here is the added region highlighted. I change the starting measure #, but it won't change in the "display as".

Regins 2 should start with m. 30, right?

Kathleen,

Could you take another screenshot, of just the dialogue box? That one is too blurry to read.

Kathleen,

Mike is right. We don't need to see the whole screen, just the dialogue box.

ALT+PRTSCN will copy the top window. Paint will allow you to crop and annotate it.

I had the same problem: with region 2, 3 etc set for a measure range and the starting measure number textbox set to "1", the measures would still be displayed as if starting from the beginning.  I couldn't get the new range to start with 1.

The SOLUTION:  After setting up region 2, I changed the number Style to letters "A,B,C" and back to numbers 1,2,3 and that fixed the display range for the regions.

Sorry guys but I am also having troubles resetting measure numbers, having read through all the suggestions,I am still at a loss

for example my initial score is numbered from 1 to 80,the next part, because there is a change to tempo starts again from no 1.

in this score there are three times that the measure has to be reset.I do hope somebody can help with this.I have a distant memory that

the measure tool played a part in all this.Thanking you in anticipation

kind regards

To Robert Coil: Your solution worked perfectly. I had to do the operation twice, for an 8-movement work, but your suggestion worked like a charm both times. DEEPLY GRATEFUL. THANK YOU!!

Hi Guys,I have no idea why,at this time I have received an E-mail concerned with resetting measure numbers in Finale, but

seeing as it is Sunday, and I don't have much to do I am going to throw my hat into the the ring,as despite all attempts at sorting

out measure renumbering I have so far been unable to actually sort the whole debacle out,As an aide memoire may I reiterate

the basic problem The opening piece of music is numbered from 1 through to measure 60.The next piece of music is then

numbered from measure 1 through to 70 ( all these measures are hypothetical and are only examples) In some instances a

piece could have three or four movements,so the need to to reset measures my occur a number of times in the one piece

again many thanks for any constructive help that you can give

kind regards

EricJohnston.

resetting measure numbers in Finale

Eric Johnston,

I am not sure why you are having difficulties.

Please specify the steps you've already taken (to solve the problem), so that we can rule out things.

To me it seems pretty straightforward.

Document menu > Edit Measure Number Regions…

Peter, you are right that it seems pretty simple and straight forward when it works. The problem is that sometimes it doesn't work right. I posted a work around, basically, change numbering to alphabet sequence, then back to numbering. I can't tell you what makes it become flaky.

My particular difficulties arose when trying to update a VERY old Finale file.  But Robert's work-around did the trick. Other weird problems

arose as well... The work is in 8 movements, and when I created a text block for the fourth movement, consisting of the number IV, Finale

somehow decided that ALL the movements should be IV... and changed all the text blocks. Behaving as if I had defined them as page numbers, or something, only I hadn't - and the movements have different lengths, some only one page long, some five....Anyway I got that fixed ... by erasing them all and putting in new blocks.  Also big problems in attempting to select regions for the purpose of fitting a certain number of measures to a system.  Select measures 12-17, and Finale selects measures 1-17.  I learned that it is better to treat the piece as a single movement until ALL the editing is done, then split it up into movements.  Finale is NOT HAPPY when you try to update from an older version.... and the older the version, the unhappier (and weirder) it gets.   Flaky, in Robert's excellent word.  Wishing you good luck, Eric!

Just to say I have taken on peter's excellent "snap shot" of a Measure Number dialogue box with all the

relevant information,I am now in the process of trying to get a printout of the entire document. In conclusion

I am assuming that before you go anywhere trying to renumber any piece of music you should ensure to

reset the default value to a much higher number.doing a quick estimation of the likely number of measures

required. And,to everybodies delight, may I say that this will be my last involvement in anything to do with

measures resetting,renumbering,or whatever!!

Kind regards

Whether you use a feature is up to you, of course.

J Adrian Verkouteren queries why a questioner does not omit a measure number in order to maintain the desired sequence. Please could you tell me how to do this?  I am having all the old difficulties making measure numbers match a source other performers will be using, as I have used the ruse of adding extra half measures to accommodate where pickup measures have created shorter bars, and just missing my extra mini-measures out of the count would solve it.

I use windows 10 and finale 26

Margaret Johnson,

I am not J Adrian Verkouteren (who wrote: “marking a measure not to count in the numbering”), but I think that I can answer your question:

Measure Tool.

Double-click the measure to be omitted from measure numbering.

The dialog box Measure Attributes appears.

De-select the option {Include in Measure Numbering}.
