I have the same problem a few other users have complained about when after working in Finale 25 for a long period of time the .musx file goes missing and I cannot do a save anymore.  I am using the latest version of Finale 25 on a Windows 10 PC. This problem usually occurs when I leave Finale open to any piece I'm working on for an extended amount of time with no activity.  Fortunately, I have learned to make sure I have auto-save set and the Make backup when saving" turned on.  But here's the problem.  I notice that even though I say do auto-save every 10 minutes Finale only does an auto-save if I have updated anything in the file.  If I walk away and leave Finale open I would expect that based on the terminology of auto-save Finale should still continue to issue the auto-save command until I finally issue a save request and exit.  But it doesn't.  For example, I was working on a piece today and the timestamp on the auto-save file was 12/31/2017 at 2:10 PM.  I left Finale up and running and did not come  back to work on it until 01/01/2018 at 1:15 AM.  By that time I would have expected auto-save to continue issuing the auto-save commands all afternoon and evening but that is not the case.  But also, the .musx file was now missing and I could not save the file.  I know I issued a Ctrl-S command to save my work before walking away from my work at 2:10 PM because I have had this problem before.  The question is when did the musx file disappear?  And why did the auto-save stop saving?  Does it only work if I have made changes to the file of did it stop because I lost the .musx file?

Oh yes...happy new year

I never intentionally leave any program open when I expect to be away from the computer. The computer is just doing too much "housekeeping" in the background for me to trust it with any work I value. If Windows goes into energy-saving mode, it can power down the hard drives, which would make autosave problematic even if Finale was allowed to give the command ratehr than also being "put to sleep."

So as frustrating as your problem is, and as much as I hope Finale could soon make Finale "Windows-proof" (and Mac-proof), I would strongly suggest not leaving the file open if you value your work.

I am having the same problem. I can see the .musx file on my screen (after leaving the computer on unattended) and the only version I now have available is a .bakx file. I understand I shouldn't leave my files open but I sure wish I could.

For those of us who do have to leave work unattended, we learn to not let our computers go to sleep, disable letting our drives power down, use the boot drive for our applications and active work files. Booting from a large SSD (2T) makes all of this easy. An SSD uses almost no power when idle and very little when active. Reboot daily to minimize the effects of memory leaks—all systems have them to one degree or another (worse if connected to the internet)

On a Mac, these settings are easily set in System Preferences. I use secondary drives to store my streaming libraries and and backup only.
