Using Finale 2014 on a Mac (version 2.5).

I want to do a global change to all my dynamic markings.

I can do it with Rehearsal Marks but not Dynamic markings

Go to the Dynamics Category, click the Edit Category button, go to the Music Font tab and make your change there.

Thanks Bruce,

I chose Category Designer from the Document heading and selected Font. I then doubled the size (24 to 48) and the first two entries responded with an increase in size, BUT no other dynamic markings. What am I doing wrong? Your help is appreciated.

Try this:

In the window Expression Selection, click the category Dynamics, to view only the dynamics.

Select all the dynamics (Shift-click the last dynamic).

Use the pop up menu {Reset to Category} to reset all the dynamics to the Dynamics Category fonts.

It is obvious that I am not making myself clear. I have a musical part, scanned in and suitably (hopefully) correctly. The Dynamic marks such as p, mf, and sfz look fine, but I would like to make them larger. I select "mf" and click on "Document", find and click on "Category Designer" which allows me to change the font and size of the dynamic. When I then click "OK" only the first two dynamic marks are enlarged. Using shift when I click the last dynamic marking, did not help.

Has anyone worked out where I am going wrong.

Apologetically and appreciatively

Cyril

Cyril,

From your description it sounds like only the first two dynamics have their fonts “linked” to the Dynamics Category’s font settings.

Did you try resetting all the dynamics (using the pop up menu I showed in the screen shot)?

If your file was imported or originally a pre-2012 file, check to see if some of your dynamics are in the Miscellaneous category instead of the Dynamics category. If some are there, you would need to move them to the Dynamics category and have them adopt the (newer) default font of the rest of the Dynamics category.

Hello Peter,

I cannot get to the Window called Expression Selection, shown in your reply to my problem. How do you get to it?

"Jadrian how do you get to Miscellaneous category?

I tried again and did get to the Expression Selection. It seems I can change the size of individual dynamic marks but not change the size  of them all at once. Is that true? I also found the Miscellaneous category which contains none of the dynamic marks I want to enlarge.

If you edit the expression category Dynamics, and change the font size there, then your edits will affect all dynamics that have their font size “linked” to the Dynamics category.

If you edit each dynamic individually (via selecting the dynamic, and clicking “Edit…”), then you can only resize one dynamic at a time.

When doing so, you automatically “un-link” the font size from the Dynamics category.

To “re-link” / “re-set” the font size back to the Dynamics category, use the pop up menu {Reset to Category} (shown in a previous post).

When you alter the font size in the expression designer, be sure you are changing the Music font rather than just the text font.

Hello J Adrian

That helped. I found that some of my dynamic markings were not part of the category and I used "Reset to Category" to put them all together. Hey presto I could do a global change of the dynamic marking size.

Thank you and all the others for your help.
