As a Finale user for 20 years, probably the most import function is the metatool functionality.  Now in the newer versions of Finale one valuable key has been lost -- the semicolon! When in Speedy Entry, control-semicolon now calls up another function (which one??) which prevents the movement to that programmed tool.  In other words, say I program Speed Entry metatool with the quote key and the Selection Tool with the semicolon key.  When in Speedy Entry, I am unable to switch to the Selection Tool because it is apparently calling up a function within Speedy Entry, preventing the switch.

Any help with this?  Losing a keyboard short cut for a tool = lost time.

Thanks

Take a look through the Speedy Entry shortcuts, and see if you can spot the one that’s assigned to those keystrokes. Then, you can change them.

The semicolon in Speedy entry has long been the shortcut to change a regular note into a grace note.

@Mike good idea, but there is nothing on the list for control-semicolon

@J Adrian yes semicolon is gracenote, but not control-semicolon

Ok. . I started reading through ALL the keyboard shortcuts and found control-; under the Text Tool. "Full justify a text in a text block".  But I only see instructions to change Simple Entry keyboard shortcuts, and not Text Tool keyboard shortcuts.  Plus, upon typing control-; you can see the drop-down menu "Speedy" heading react at the top of the screen.

Cancel above.  I think control-; for the text justification is for Windows.  It's command-; for Mac.  Now what???

What do you want ∧-; to do?

I want it to be one of the limited keys for programmed metatools.

control F    G    H    J    K    L    ;    '

....were all programmable tools. Now  control  ;   is taken out of the picture because it's trumped by some other function or glitch

I’ll ask again: what do you want it to do? Perhaps we can show you how to program it.

I don’t use speedy, so I don’t inow what your expectations, are.

I'm not programming a metatool IN Speedy entry, I'm programming keyboard shortcuts to bounce between different tools in the tool palatte.  Here is someone else's explanations of the process if mine own is unclear:

Ctrl + Opt + (F, G, H, J, K, L, ; or ‘), Double Click – This programs the tool you double clicked to the letter or symbol (F, G, H, J, K, L, ;, or ‘) you typed.  This is useful because instead of clicking the tool in the Main Tool Palette, you can now hit Ctrl + (key you assigned) and the you will switch to the tool. Example:  You hit Ctrl + Opt + J and double click on the Expression Tool.  You hit escape twice to switch to the Selection Tool and do a task with that.  But, when you next need to put in an expression, you hit Ctrl + J and it switches to the Expression Tool (and you’re instantly ready to put in that expression you want).  It removes many time-consuming clicks if done right.

"I'll say again". . .Finale used to make 8 of these characters available (F through '), but now there are only 7, due to the new conflict with the semicolon.

Brian,

I don't get it. I have Ctrl-T to switch to the text tool. Ctlr-S for the Staff Tool. Ctrl-M for the measure tool. Ctrl-P to remove courtesy accidentals. All of my F keys do what I want them to do. And I didn't do it with your hold-down-three-keys-and-doubleclick; I programmed it into the Mac keyboard App shortcuts.

Do you want to learn how to do this, or would you rather keep pissing and moaning because the semicolon doesn't follow your instructions?

I'll do that.

BTW, the manual has many mistakes. I realize that it may have worked in the past, and maybe they reprogrammed the key without asking your permission, or without updating the manual. So, you just keep on keepin' on. Without the semicolon!

EDIT: OK, I read the manual, and now I know why I never used that method!

Indeed there seems to be a bug here.

You can program tool metatools on F, G, H, J, K, L.

But no longer on ; and ' - you should report this to Tech Support.
