Finale 25.4.1.163

I have had a recurring (and exasperating) problem with several versions of Finale.  If I copy music in one file (e.g., in the key of D) and paste it into another file (into measures that are also set for the key of D), Finale transposes many of the notes to different pitches!  The truly weird part of it is that it does not transpose all of the notes by the same interval: some are a fourth, some are a major sixth, some are not transposed at all.  I have tried several times to connect with Finale tech support about this, but have never received a good answer.

This is analogous to copying text from one Microsoft Word file to another and finding that most of the words were misspelled in the target file.  (Microsoft Word would be out of business in a minute if this were a recurring problem.)

Has anyone else had this problem?  Any workarounds or other solutions?  Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

That issue sounds quite weird.

Without examining the actual Finale documents we can only guess.

You can not attach Finale documents here, but you can upload them elsewhere, and add a hyperlink here.

Is this problem a layout problem, or a playback problem - or both?

This is a layout and playback problem.

I can upload sample files ("elsewhere"), but I don't know how to do that.

On the web there are several Finale forums that let their forum users attach Finale documents.

Here is one example:

http://www.finaleforum.com/index.php

NB:

If you register as a user on the forum I linked to above, you will have to wait for a while before you can make a post with your Finale documents attached.

This a security step, to avoid spam bots.

Weird. I can think of a few different causes — all in settings but don’t want to speculate without seeing some examples.

Having precisely the same problem. It's killing me; trying to merge different sections of a movement into a single file by pasting, and everything transposes no matter what I do. Feel free to speculate about what might be causing it; I've tried every setting I can get my hands on...

Ms. O’Hallisey—

I think I finally traced the source of this problem to the “keyless“ key signature. My sense is that if you have keyless measures anywhere in your document, Finale will have cut and paste transposition problems. So I am now careful always to use C major or A minor as the signature and to avoid “keyless“ like the plague. I have not had trouble with the phantom transposition problem since.

Good luck!

I think you’re right! Started out as keyless. That’ll be the problem, thanks!!
