After changing Mac system software, Finale requires re-registration to enable print/save, but I'm already registered. How do I work around this? Thanks.
Did you de-authorize before you usgraded your system software?
Usually the best way to deal with registration/authorization conflicts is to use the "Submit a request" link at the top of the screen.
(You do not say which version fo Finale your are using, not which Mac OS you have switched to.
No, I didn't de-authorize Finale before the sys upgrade, because I didn't know that the guy working on my computer was going to change the system. He did it without asking my permission while working on another problem.
I tried Finale Support, but they won't answer my support request because I'm running a "legacy" version of Finale (2004b). They referred me to this user forum.
Until this sys change, I was running OS X 10.4.11 and Finale worked great on it. He changed the sys to 10.5.8 and now I can't get past this registration dialogue. I know there is a way to do this because this happened some years ago (before 2004b went legacy) when I changed my hard drive. Finale Support answered my request and provided a code to unlock the dialogue.
The version is already in the Info box. Thanks!
Any Mac that runs OS 10.5.8 cannot run the current versions of Finale. If it's a PPC, don't bother—can't be done. Some of the earliest Intel Mac Pros may be hackable to where it might be doable but I wouldn't take the time. They cannot run the 64bit kernel.
If you are running a tower and the boot disk was changed from one drive position to another, you will experience this. I don't remember which version was the first to use the license server but I remember this happening on my G5. Back then, I had to swap drive bays, deauthorize then swap back and authorize. That will work but let's see if you don't have to:
Nowadays, your MM User account lets you log in and deauthorize old installations. Unfortunately, I don't know how back that goes. Log in, click on Manage Authorizations. If it lets you do it, you're good. Let us know.
Before the License Server, there was a back door code that would unlock old versions of Finale. I discovered it by accident when my 1994(?) Upgrade did not include a key code so I typed in Upgrade and it worked! I told Tom about it at NAMM and that was fixed but I don't remember which version—2000 or 2002 IIRC.
I want to keep running FInale 2004b (and all my other old apps that worked fine on OS X 10.4.11). I didn't approve of the changeover to 10.5.8. (The guy thought he was doing me a favor, but it screwed up not only Finale but also Photoshop Elements 2.0.)
I just want to know whether it's possible to unlock Finale, and how to do it. I'll try your suggestions - thanks! If Finale still won't work on the new system, I'll re-install sys 10.4.11 and hope it still works.
(PS - I run FInale on a G4 tower that I use only for offline office work.)
Ok.... this problem is not OS 10.5. It is a license issue. Old forum posts indicate that 2004 can run over 10.5.
If Manage Authorizations is not available, going back to 10.4 isn't going to fix it. Having MM reset the authorization can't happen till tomorrow at the earliest— if they will. For that, use the Submit a request link at the top of the page.
Again, if Manage Authorizations is not available, figure out the original drive bay (or Master/Slave position), put the drive back and it should work. There could be other problems with the install, of course. There are 2 ATA busses and 3 bays capable of up to 4 drives using a stack bracket in one of them. Master/Slave changes drive position even if the cabling has not changed.
OS 10.5 is a mistake on most G4s. A few of the Mirror Door models can run it at an acceptable level and most models cannot run it at all. Rule of thumb: if a G4 can boot into OS 9, avoid 10.5. My 1.25 DP was the last version to support OS 9; one of its three drives has 10.5 just so I can see how it runs—barely. I still have it installed but never run it.
I remember upgrading Photoshop Elements from 3 to 4 because 3 did not run in Leopard. I still think that 3 was the best version ever with 6 close behind; 4 was ok. Many apps required upgrades from 10.4 to 10.5 just as many didn't work from 10.3 to 10.4.
