MY workflow?
  1. create a score with a recorder and mandolin staff (any instrument  type will do my example uses the mandolin because I want to add a tabulation staff but not in the score only  in the part view)
  2. switch view to mandolin part
  3. The drag works fine in the score view (this is NOT the problem)
  4. IMPORTANT switch to part view press - option, command > to get to mandolin
  5. Add another instrument whilst still in part view - in my case I want the tab to run underneath the music
  6. Now I have two staffs in the part view Mandolin and Mandolin tab.
  7. drag music to the tab from the mandolin
  8. here I get an error
  9. I have been advised by support to reinstall finale but I would just like to see if this is occurs on my Mac only. The reason is I have a gut reaction that it may be not just on my Mac if I get a thumbs up from everyone I will reinstall finale. (I did this a couple of weeks ago to correct an different issue so I am thinking it shouldn't be corrupt again so soon)
  10. I can do it in score but it means hiding other instruments every time I want to print the combination mandolin and tab
  11. If I could get an idea from people that would be great, Ive sent a video of the error to support so am waiting for them to double check that my workflow is absolutely clear.

… I can do it in score but it means hiding other instruments every time I want to print the combination mandolin and tab …

Adding the Mandolin TAB staff in the score adds the new staff to the entire document.

You can hide the staff from the score’s Page View, but the staff will still show up when you view the score from Scroll View.

When you have added the Mandolin TAB staff to the document, you can create a new, linked part containing the Mandolin staff and the Mandolin TAB staff.

Then you can print this new {Mandolin & Mandolin TAB} part without “hiding other instruments”.

Thanks Peter,

I just got the same answer from support. That works great for me as I rarely need to print the score for my use. It shouldn't work the way I was doing it but as I am persistent I manage to click my way in to create the error. It's possibly to do with the way Mac manages separate windows.

Thank you for helping!!!

I'd approach your problem a little differently. I would include both the mandolin staff and the mandolin TAB in your "full score," which you will never format nor print.

Then I would create a new "conductor's score" (call them what you will) that contains all the staves except those you want to hide (TAB staff?). This is the score your would format and print.

Use the "full score" to generate the part for your mandolin player containing both notes and TAB notation.

I use this method to keep all my work together in one score from which I can generate a conductor score and a piano/vocal score through various "parts" layouts.

Thank you J that completes the Picture nicely!

As I was ruminating that most conductors wouldn't want to see the tab. Also it  will allow me to create lead sheets from a score.

thank you for contributing!
