In Scroll view, how do I get set up to view only a few staves of a full orchestra score?

I don’t use it, but I believe that Staff Sets are your answer. Look in your help files for instructions.

The problem with that is when I go to the user manual and search Staff Sets, I get information titled "Staff Sets" but instructions are about Staff settings - in other words, no answer.

The closest I've got to it is in View > Select Staff Sets > and the list of course is grayed out because I haven't made a staff set yet - and still don't know how to.

Charles Horton,

To create a Staff Set you must be in Scroll View.

When I search the user manual, and search for Staff Sets, I get a list of search results.

Among the search results is

Select Staff Set submenu

Quoting the manual:

Select Staff Set submenu

You can significantly speed up your work on orchestral scores by hiding the staves you’re not currently editing so that there’s less music for Finale to draw. You can create up to eight Staff Sets—different arrangements of the staves in your music. This method only changes the display in Scroll View.

  • All Staves. Choose this command to display all the staves in your score in Scroll View. This Staff Set cannot be reassigned.
  • Staff Set 1 • … • 8. Choose from these commands to display the staves you assigned to the corresponding Staff Set.

To create a Staff Set, click the Staff tool ; select only the staves you want to appear when you choose this command. Next, while pressing CTRL, choose a Staff Set from the View > Staff Set submenu to define it.

Thanks. "To create a Staff Set, click the Staff tool ; select only the staves you want to appear when you choose this command."

After I  "click the staff tool" while in Scroll View, I can't see where or how to select the staves I want to use in a staff set. For starters, I click Scroll View and the entire orchestra score displays. Then I click the staff tool. At this point, I could not see where to select the desired staves. So then I tried clicking on individual staves in Scroll View by holding the Shift key as I clicked the staves i wanted. But the staves I skipped holding the Shift key selected also. When I tried that using the Control key I could only make one selection - the one I previously selected de-selected. .     ??

This works for me:

When I have selected some staves, including some “in-between” staves that should not be selected, I can de-select an individual staff by Shift-clicking its handle.

From now on, the staff selection is no longer contiguous.

Hence only the staff handles will be highlighted.

Thanks much. It looks like that did the trick. I've got it now. Appreciate it.

I don't use that feature myself (obviously) but it is helpful for what I'm doing right now. Thanks.

There exists/ a JW Staff Set Panel Plug-in - very useful if you have large scores and want to remember various staff sets you have created. I have used it a lot in the past, but don't have it installed since I upgraded to Finale 27. It can still be found at the JW Plug-in site -   http://www.finaletips.nu/index.php/download/category/43-64-bit-windows-plug-ins , all the way on the bottom under JW Test Plugins for 64-bit Finale.

This plug-in can create and display staff sets in a list and navigate between the staff sets. Navigation to a staff set can be made in Page View as well. Furthermore, each staff can be named and the staff set names are saved with the document (a category named JW Plug-in Data must exist in the document for this purpose). When a staff set is created, it inherits the relative vertical staff positions from the selection.
