Hi,

This might be a bit off-topic, but I was hoping you could help me.
Do you know if there are any "industrial standards" for wind band notation? (layout, staff size, etc.)

In other words, how can I make a concert band score (and parts) look like those I would buy from companies like Hal Leonard?

I work as a band conductor and arranger in Iceland, the tiny country in the middle of the Atlantic.
Although we have many volcanes we have few school bands - only 30 bands!
I work for an union that arranges and publishes music for these bands, and we want our scores to look as good as possible.

Any help appreciated!

Kind regards,
Martin

Each publisher has its own house style. Just choose a publisher that you want to emulate, buy a piece of music and try to match the size, fonts, etc....

Each publisher has their own house style. You will have to sit down with a score that you like, and do your best to duplicate the elements. Then, save that as a template. No easy answer, I fear.

The current standard for much of modern notation has pretty much been set by Elaine Gould in her book,

Behind Bars: The Definitive Guide to Music Notation (Faber Edition)

https://www.amazon.com/Behind-Bars-Definitive-Guide-Notation/dp/0571514561

There's a lot she does not cover like jazz, Broadway, TAB (15 pages on guitar but nothing on TAB), Nashville etc. in its 704 pages but more and more, publishers are gravitating to "What does Elaine (or The Gould) say?" whenever there's a question.

Scoring Notes has a 2-part interview with her on the subject:

If you're not receiving Scoring Notes, it's free and you should find it most interesting as it discusses these issues as well as the major notation apps and their use. You sign up at the bottom of the page.

Weird — this thread shows no replies though I posted one almost immediately.

That was 6 days ago. I wonder if the OP ever saw it.

Not that this is what happened in your case, but sometimes I write an absolutely brilliant reply and then (I assume) forget to hit Submit before returning to the Thread List thinking I had submitted. But that's just me.

Too bad...

What is OP?

Mike, would you be so kind to repeat briefly what you wrote?

No. My reply is still visible to me as does Edited  — which I did a few hours later when I first noticed that the number of replies was listed as 0

I will assume that you can see it now. I see 6 replies including this with the window open while the tally is 5 when I close the window.

Weird… Here's the screen shot of my first reply. Sorry it took so long for you to see it.

My earlier response didn't show up either, until I logged in. Finale forum software strikes again!
