It seems that all PDFs are created via Microsoft: Print to PDF, regardless if done from File> Export, Print Menu or Graphics Export Pages, and it has disabled the external Print to PDF function.
I have been using PDF Creator and now also, as a test, Cute PDF. They (and apparently also Print to Adobe Acrobat) don't work anymore, I get the same error message below when attempting to open the file that was created. Also contacted support, so far no reply.

Same basic issue

Last I checked, the Microsoft tool was depreciated as a separate app but CUTE should work. I'd get this to MM Support right away. Please report back what they find.

There are some longstanding Windows fixes pr ScoringNotes.

here we go:

Thanks for contacting MakeMusic Customer Support. With the recent release of Finale Version 27.4, we have improved a long-standing issue in which exporting as  PDF resulted in multiple save prompts when printing multiple parts. This behavior has now been fixed with the use of Microsoft Print to PDF.

Unfortunately, this affects users like yourself that utilize third-party PDF programs (i.e. CutePDF) in that these programs no longer work when printing from Finale. Please know that this is an unintended byproduct of the maintenance update and that our team is actively working on a solution.

Currently, the only workaround is to utilize the built-in Microsoft Print to PDF feature by following these instructions:

  1. Open the file in Finale.
  2. Choose FilePrint. The Print dialog box appears.
  3. Click Setup. The Print Setup dialog box is displayed.
  4. From the Printer Name drop-down menu, choose Microsoft Print to PDF

Since we are attempting to gather as much information possible regarding this issue, would you be able to elaborate on your reasoning on using other PDF programs? Is this simply a personal preference or do you have a specific reason? This helps us understand the urgency of the matter!

All best,

Edison

There are those of us that don’t use 3rd party apps for this but it’s crucial that this will work with the main ACROBAT DV or PRO app and driver. I’d say for are a lot of us, this is pretty urgent. Must fix please

My responce to Support:

Thanks for your reply. I know that I can work with the Microsoft Print to PDF feature, but it's really too bad that your "improvements" have ruined a widely used feature. After all, creating PDFs is, after inputting and laying out the music, perhaps the most important element to actually provide conductors and musicians with useful performance material.

As for my preference to use exterior PDF writers - they are simpler to use, and easier and quicker to control by being able to on one screen set the file name, its directory placing, size adjustments, plus the immediate opening of the created file to check it (without having to navigate around in the file manager to find it, open it, etc.)

It's good to hear that your are actively working on resolving the problem. I think it's of great importance to the community in general.

Yep...it needs to work with the installed pdf printer from ACROBAT.

I noticed on my Mac Version of Finale 27.3 (I haven't tried updating), the part print does indeed go very fast, whereas on Windows it tends to open a separate window for every. single. part.  That would be a nice feature.

Agree with all the above. Please make this work.

I print almost everything from several programs to the ACROBAT printer and am combining them in ACROBAT or importing them to InDesign. It makes no sense for me to have to use a third party PDF printer just for Finale. Also, when I use the Finale Export to PDF, it creates files that are twice the size that the ACROBAT printer does. This needs to be fixed quickly.

This reminds me of the days when I had to have a book reprinted because of changes that happened in an update and I didn't catch on the approval copy the print company sent me. (I think it cost the company I worked for about $8,000.)

By the way, is there a way to revert to 27.3 till this is fixed?

They are aware pf the problem, and say they are working on it. But go ahead, and open a support ticket. The more information they get, the better the fix will be. (Well, we can hope.)

Definitely, ask about reverting to 27.3.

Again, if you have a recent backup, reverting to 27.3 is easy. If not, you'll have to get a download link from Support. I do not know if you have to remove the later build before reinstalling but those directions are here:

Acrobat is a 3rd party app. Apparently, the once-depreciated Microsoft Print to PDF is back and now native. MakeMusic has given a workaround above. If you cannot make that work, I recommend taking a look at this page that gives solutions and workarounds for the Microsoft app.

I see your point about about Acrobat being a 3rd party app! But since Adobe created the PDF file format, I look at any other software creating a PDF as 3rd party, even though it technically may not be.

I also just discovered this issue with printing to PDF with 3rd party apps, though glad it still works with Microsoft's PDF printer. My preferred PDF printer for many years has been PDF Redirect, as it gives me more options on printing, saving, password protecting, merging, etc., as well as it creates smaller PDF's. I'm looking forward to having this issue resolved.

Just a note. I found the 27.3 installer on my notebook. I uninstalled Finale 27 using Windows Settings Apps. Then re-installed with the 27.3 file. Everything is back to normal. It restored my screen position at startup, palette layout, Lua scripts, JW Change sequences, TGTools remaps, and FinaleScripts.

I use doPDF and it works like it always has with one exception. It defaults to my Finale 27 folder so I have to change that to the folder I want usually my Desktop. You guys might try doPDF if you need a PDF printer utiloity.

I also still had the 27.3 installer and did the same procedure. No problems, now I am back in 27.3 as it was.

BTW - tried doPDF in 27.4, but (for me) it didn't work (same problem as with the others, it created an unreadable pdf file)

I would appreciate it if the capability to use the Adobe printer is restored as soon as possible. Thank you.

I am running Finale for Windows 27.4.0.108 on a Windows 11 PC. All software (incl. Adobe Acrobat) is up to date.

  • As of this week, in Finale, I get this alert when I choose "Adobe PDF" in the dialogue box: When you create a PostScript file you must rely on system fonts and [not] use document fonts. Please go to the printer properties, "Adobe PDF Settings" page and turn OFF the option "Rely on system fonts only; do not use document fonts. When I did that, it would create the PDF ... yesterday.
  • As of this morning, the created PDF cannot be opened. I get this alert: Adobe Acrobat could not open [file name] because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded). To create an Adobe PDF document, go to the source application. Then print the document to Adobe PDF.

I can get a printable PDF when I choose "Microsoft Print to PDF."

This is strange because until yesterday doPDF worked as it always did except for the asking me twice where to save it. However yesterday about 50% of the time I got that same error message when I tried to open the PDF in Acrobat Reader.

Adobe Acrobat could not open [file name] because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).

Now this only happened about half of the time. If I simply made another doPDF document it opened up without issue.

I use CutePDF to print pdf files from Finale. I've reverted back to version 27.0 until the issue is resolved. I worked in the updated Finale 27.4 for about three hours before discovering the problem. Fortunately I remembered to export those files to Finale 2012 before uninstalling 27.4 and reinstalling 27.0, so I could reopen them in 27.0. I didn't lose any work or notice any format problems in 27.0.

When you create a PostScript file...

PostScript has been depreciated for years and is no longer supported in Finale 27. I do not know if this has anything to do with 27.4's inability to print to 3rd party PDF drivers in Windows. We'll just have to wait till MakeMusic fixes this and then you can check again. Please let us know when you do.

... 27.4's inability to print to 3rd party PDF drivers in Windows.

I don't have CutePDF but doPDF does work at least for me. Up until yesterday it worked as it always has except for the asking me where to save it twice. I have no idea why it screwed up yesterday but today it is back to working.

The asking me where to save it first time is in the default Finale folder. That stays constant each time. It is like Finale thinks it is a document file to save.

PDF made by doPDF made form Finale 27.4 converted to jpeg for display. This is a 9x12 page, too.
