After I have created the score for my big band I click Manage parts, etc. and when I bring up the newly created part, e.g. Trumpet 1, the part name does not show up. When I manually enter the part name, e.g. Trumpet 1, Trumpet 1 shows up in all the parts. Thus ALL the parts are named Trumpet 1. I must be doing something wrong. Any help is appreciated.

If I understand you correctly, you are creating a text block, and typing ‘Trumpet 1’ in the text block - right?
Do not type ‘Trumpet 1’.
Instead, use
Text menu > Insert > Part/Score Name
Also, take a look in
Window menu > ScoreManager > File Info
Note what is in the field
“Score Name” Insert
