OS: Windows 10

Software version: Finale 2014.5.6359

Intermittently when I try to save a file in Finale, I get one or more alert messages in a row (see screenshots). The most common one indicates it had trouble copying the backup file to the backup location because the file already exists, which is kind of OK because at least it still saves my file.  Sometimes, however, I get a final prompt stating that there was an "enigma error - 19" (not sure if it's always 19, but it was when I just reproduced the issue).  If I get the engima error, this generally means the original musx file I was trying to save no longer exists, and no backup was made.  If I wasn't in the process of closing down Finale, then usually the only remedy I have found to save my file is to do a "Save As" and choose another name.  The real trouble is if I forget all this and close finale, then select "Save" when prompted, because if I do that and happen to get this enigma error, the original file will no longer exist, and since the backup failed I won't have a backup that includes my latest changes. Luckily for me, I'm pretty paranoid and so far I've been able to remember to first save in case of such errors, then close, but I'd really prefer not to have to be so vigilant to get around this issue every time I just want to save my files.

Finally, I'll just mention that every time this happens, if I start Finale back up again it will sometimes ask me to send a crash report.  However these crash reports always fail to send for no apparent reason.

Windows 10. Latest Finale release.

OMG. I have been dealing with this exact problem for about a month now. Finally this morning I was so fed up I Googled it, thinking it was likely a Windows problem only to discover this post. The other day I lost about 4 hours work because my file did not get saved and i didn't know!!

This morning I almost lost 2 hours work!

Even the "save as" trick doesn't always work. I have tried running as "administrator" and that doesn't work. And I cannot detect a pattern in the behaviour (like a series of commands or actions). It just suddenly seems to start happening. I log on as "admin" and check directory properties and they are "read only". I don't know if that's the issue....I change them...they change back later!

Help.

Was there ever an answer to this posted?

PLEASE!

The answer seemed to be to contact MM Support directly via the "Submit a request" link at the top of this page.

Realize that you can try Export XML to save work if Save and Save As are not working.

Thank you. Yes i see that. But since this was a year ago, i wondered if there was someplace else to find an answer to the issue.

The OP was saving to GoogleDrive and not locally. Does this apply to you, too?

Thanks but no. All on my local hard drive. I think it is some kind of "race condition" that occurs with coordination of file removal, re-naming, and/or copying. It's frustrating because it is not consistent...sometimes I can work half the day with no problems; then suddenly Autosave gets the error...then "save" reports errors about the backup file. Then even "save as" starts failing.

From my old life (before becoming a musician I was software engineer) my experience suggests a hardware problem or an O/S problem. I sure hope its not my hard drive...scans of it show nothing.

Thanks for your time and any suggestions.

Thanks for your answers....just to follow up...

I got so frustrated trying to fix this error a couple of days ago that I screwed up my system. Some kind of online disk checker that I used caused some kind of corruption.

It was so bad that i had to use the dreaded "Windows restore" to go to a previous point (2 days prior). This results in, among other things, a registry re-build.

Well something in there must have already been corrupted as I have been running Finale now for 2 days without any errors.

We shall see if this situation continues.

Well I ran trouble free for almost 9 days.

Now this "permission", or "file system" problem has appeared again!

Autosave isn't working consistently.

I almost lost 4 hours of work yesterday.

Does anyone have any idea where I might look?

Thanks!

Tom

And today when I did a "save", the backup file creation also got an error message.

It just doesn't make sense especially when I am running with administrator permissions...

I gotta defer to Tech Support on this one.

Sorry....do you mean I should forward this to Tech Support or have you done that?

I am not sure how this "help centre" forum works:)
