I want to change the note shape of a whole note into #124 (a diamond) in the Note Shape Mover Symbol Selection box, but those symbols are only placed on the G above the treble clef staff. Can I move the note head down to the top line F? The only symbol I've found that resembles the lead sheet notation is an X, but it's too small and I lose the whole note shape. I haven't found a symbol with what I want.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Are you using Mac Finale? What version of Finale? - perhaps v26?

I am sorry, but I do not know of a “Note Shape Mover Symbol Selection box”.

How to get there?

… those symbols are only placed on the G above the treble clef staff …

If I understand you correctly, no matter on what scale step the Whole Note is located (on A, on B, on C, on D, …), the diamond notehead always appears on the “G above the treble clef” - right?

Unfortunately I am unable to reproduce the problem.

Can you provide steps to reproduce the problem?

You don't say what OS or Finale version you are using, but for me (Win10, Fin27.4)  this works perfectly:
Select the measure(s) with whole note(s) and use the JW Change (Noteheads) Plug-in. There you can adjust many parameters at once - note shape, position, pitch etc. - to arrive at what you are asking for.

Colin we are going to need a lot more info like OS, Finale version and exact steps of how you got there. I suspect you did not enter or insert a note but a shape.

Thanks to everyone who has replied. I have a MacBook Pro w/Ventura (OS 13.2.1) and Finale 25.5. To get to the note shape I'm describing, go to the Special Tools box, then click on the 'Note Shape Mover' button (stem w/asterisk as a notehead),then click on the note you want to change. Click on that handle and the Symbol Selection box appears, similar to the Articulation Tool box. A variety of different shapes appear, and the one I wanted to use is #124. I also tried #192. The big diamond is placed on the G space on top of the staff and the 'x' note shape is placed on the line I entered with Speedy Entry.

I did use Speedy Entry to initially create the note head, then tried to change the note head into a new shpae, then tried to move the shape to a different line on the staff. I can move the shape horizontally, but not vertically, even if I try lowering the 'pitch' of the note by a 1/2-step.

I eventually just used the Staff tool to create Rhythmic notation - still got the point across. I'm doing this for someone else and I wanted retain her manuscript as much as possible, that's why the investigation into moving the note shape.

Thanks again,
Colin

Colin Mason,

The better we understand, the better we can help.

Now that you have provided us with more info, I am confident that we can help you.

However, it is not clear to me, what note shape you are trying to get:

- Diamond or X ?

- What rhythmical value ? - whole note ? - half note ?

Could you perhaps attach a scanning of the manuscript?

As far I can see, he said that he wants to
... change the note shape of a whole note into #124 (a diamond) ... but those symbols are only placed on the G above the treble clef staff. Can I move the note head down to the top line F ...

He is really using the wrong tool to do this. Like I said, it can all be accomplished with the JW Change Plug-in. Fin25 didn't have JW Change built-in yet, as far as I remember, but it can be downloaded for free here: http://finaletips.nu/index.php/download/category/44-64-bit-mac-plug-ins. I assume it works the same for a Mac than in Windows. Once installed, it's a very simple operation, as I have explained (after a bit of initial familiarization and trying things out), and can be done very easily and efficiently.

I have a MacBook Pro w/Ventura (OS 13.2.1) and Finale 25.5.

This is not supported and there are many issues that do not get resolved without an upgrade to v. 27. If you can get it working as-is, great but this is not a given.

Hmmm... Black Friday is day after tomorrow but I'm not seeing anyting from MakeMusic this year on any upgrade sales. The good news is that the $99 upgrade to 27 doesn't matter how old your current version is.
