Hi all,

What other sound libraries are available and viable for Finale?
I have Noteperformer and many of the Garritan libraries.

I am particularly interested in solo voice sounds.
I love the GPO5 Solo Soprano with vibrato. The Noteperformer solos are OK.

Thank you,
:-)

There are lots of free Voice Changer VST Plugins. How well any work or if at all with Finale I don't know since I haven't tried any. Get one of the free ones and try it.

Hi Ernie,

Thank you for the suggestion.

I have never heard of these "voice changer" thingys.

In the very old days there were analog modulators--can't remember the names--and Herbie Hancock helped promote them because, although he was a recognized jazz musician, he could not carry a tune.

I'll look into it.

There are hundreds of VI libraries that work.

For Windows, any that support VST2 VIs since Finale does not support VST3. Avoid anything current from Native Instruments such as Kontakt 7 until Finale changes.

The ARIA Player supports Sound Font and sFz (the Garritan VIs are sFz) libraries—many are inexpensive and some are free.

IK Multimedia's SampleTank 4 still supports VST2. You can also make your own VIs with SampleTank 4 — the Player is always free and comes with a couple gigs of free VIs when you download the Custom Shop version. There are huge bundles sometimes offered for not much money once you get on their list which will happen once you download Custom Shop.

Hi Mike,

Thank you for the information. In years past I was a bit more attuned to the more technical aspects of Finale.

Of late... not so much. ;-)

I will look into the options you noted.

In the meantime, could you please tell me what a VI is?

:-)

VI = Virtual Instrument. All of your Garritan instruments are VIs. VIs are hosted by Instrument Players, in this case, the ARIA Player. ARIA is used by other applications including Band In A Box as the default Player.

This gets a bit confusing as Instrument Players such as the ARIA Player are often referred to as "Instruments" as are VIs—but they are not the same. Many samplers can also function as a Player including Kontakt, Falcon and SampleTank while others such as ARIA and UVI only function as VI hosts. There are quite a few out there. In addition, many DAWs have their own Players such as Apple's ESX24 used in Logic and MainStage.

Finale can work with quite a few Players and there are others that are incompatible—always check before buying.

I recommended IK Multimedia's Sample Tank 4 earlier as a good place to start. Their Custom Shop players include content and all can be used within Sample Tank.

For Windows users such as yourself, ST4 still supports VST2. Unfortunately, Finale does not (yet?) support VST3 or I would also be recommending the free Kontakt bundle from Native Instruments but it's now VST3 plus AU for Mac users.

Vanessa,

Before you start or try any of these, keep in mind they do not work as seamless as Garritan or NP4. These two are specifically designed with Finale in mind. The others are  not.
