Need to construct a chord with, for example, mostly half-notes but one quarter-note that then resolves to the main harmony. PrintMusic seems to insist that all notes be the same time value.  Same problem with dotted/undotted notes, notes with/without flags, etc.

This has nothing to do with chord notation such as "Cm7" which is all the help system seems to address in response to the word "chord."

Look up “layers” not “chords.” You use layers for notes of different durations on the same beat. If you can’t figure it out after watching the help videos, post a picture, and we will help you.

Thank you for the prompt response!  That helps -- couldn't find any videos, but the manual and some experimentation helped.  Still doesn't present the opening chord as a chord, but I guess that's ok.  For some reason it insists on pointing the stems in the wrong direction, though.  The short-duration notes are all at the bottom of the base line in a piano score -- sort of a walking bass.  The stems are up when layer2 is viewed alone, but down when both layers are viewed together.  Tried to upload screenshots in .jpg and .png format, but this webpage won't accept them.

Paul Rebstock,

Generally, in Layers the stem direction is a document specific setting.

Look here:

Document menu > Document Options > Layers

You can flip a stem using the L key.
