Using Macbook Pro, running MacOS Sierra (10.12.1).  Transferring my Finale 2011 (yes, eventually I'll upgrade, just not now) from prior Mac to new Mac.  All good, except when I try to download the update file "Finale2011cMacUpdater.dmg" from MakeMusic site, I get error/blocking message that the site is categorized as malicious (Norton/Belkin) and won't allow me to download.  Any ideas?

Turn off your virus checker and download. Then, turn it back on.

Others have reported this.

I have downloaded it recently. It's safe. My antivirus software doesn't block it. Since the site is old, it's highly unlikely that MM will fix it. Disable Norton temporarily and you should be good.

Disable Human Playback and ignore the X-Code message and 2011c works fine for me. I use it for testing only nowadays.

OK. Turned off Norton/Firewall at the router. Was able to download the .dmg file.  At install I get the message: '“Update Finale.app” is an application downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it?'  I select yes/open, and then get another error message:

'“InstallFinale.mpkg” can’t be opened because it is from an unidentified developer. Your security preferences allow installation of only apps from the App Store and identified developers.'

Can't find "IntallFinale.mpkg" on remote disk or anywhere else.  Went to Mac's Security & Preferences, but the only options are to allow downloaded programs from the App Store, or from Identified Developers.  Don't see an override.  What am I missing?

The site Mike pointed you to is for bypassing Gate Keeper, part of the OS since 10.7. It got tighter in 10.9. That it's taken you this long to encounter it is a surprise.

Many older installers do not pass the code that Gate Keeper wants to see.

Thanks for your help.  I was finally able to get the update to run.  However, now the program crashes within a few minutes of opening and beginning to use it.  Must be the "gatekeeper' issue you identified.

Quite frustrating.  The program is only 5 years old.  I've been a user since all the way back to version 3.5.  I'm not using it frequently enough currently to justify buying another upgrade.  So, regrettably for now, back to MuseScore.

Well, MuseScore sucks so let's see if you can find the problem.

If Finale installed, it is because you were able to bypass GateKeeper so that is not your issue.

Did you disable Human Playback? Failure to do so will cause all versions of Finale before 2014.5 to crash immediately in OS 10.11 or later.

I keep Finale 2011c installed on my iMac running OS 10.12.1. Human Playback disabled, of course. I only use it for testing as in this case. Otherwise, I work in 2014.5 and 25.1, the two currently supported versions.

I'm still surprised you never ran into Gate Keeper. What was your old OS? How did you bring your files to the new Mac (this is important, BTW)? Did you copy—if so, how? Clone? Migration Assistant? Time Machine restore?  Do you still have access to the old Mac?

There are other potential issues. What does the crash report say? Only post up to the first 25 lines.

1. Yes, MuseScore sucks, but works.

2. Prior OS was Yosemite; now running Sierra.  Regarding migration, I simply de-authorized F2011 from prior Mac, then reinstalled on new Mac from the DVD, successfully re-authorized, then ran into this issue with the update (prior Mac is no longer available to me).

3. I've disabled Human Playback (that is, each time I try to open/start a new file; I can't get it to be permanently off).  However, I still get a crash as I begin to work on a file; here's the error message "Unhandled Exception Caught" and the first part of the log:

Once again: How did you bring your files to the new Mac? (this is important)

Do you have a backup of those files? If so, how were they stored?

I didn't migrate any program files.  I simply de-authorized F2011 on my prior Mac (gave Mac back to employer).  I then recently reinstalled F2011 on my new Mac using my Finale program DVD.  I then downloaded and installed the update that started this thread.  I don't have access to the prior Mac, and the time machine backup file was deleted when turned back to former employer.  Does this answer your question?

Thanks for answering my question. Just so I understand, everything is with new files that you are trying to create. Correct? Ok...

It's a given that 2011 is not compatible with Sierra. Three versions have been released since. That you think it should work is not an issue—get over it.

MakeMusic didn't exactly follow the Apple Toolkit until Finale 25 so it's a wonder that earlier versions work at all. OTOH, many of us are able to run it and/or 2012 in Sierra including me.

What is puzzling is that you are able to open it and begin work before it crashes. If it installed incorrectly, it should crash on startup. This leaves only three issues: a) you are doing something besides HP that causes it to crash b) it did not install correctly c) something else is trying to access your system and causing it Finale to crash.

Still trying to suss if this is an installation issue or not. If it is, I know the likely fix. If not... well, lets see if it is.

Open Font Book.app. Do you see the various Finale fonts installed?

Is there an action you are doing immediately before the crash such as trying to Save or is it random?

Are you able to create a project, disable HP then save it? If so, can you reopen the file, add notes then save?

1. I am able to start working on a new file (after it loads) if I choose to start with a default document, or if I open existing file.

2. It always crashes if I start by using the document setup wizard, or the template wizard.  It also crashes if while working on a doc I want to add a staff with the wizard (although I can add a staff the manual way without the wizard), Could the wizard be the culprit?

3. I am able to create a new doc (from default doc), disable HP, create notes, etc., save it, and reopen, save again, without apparent issues.

4. Opened Font Book.app and saw 3 Finale fonts, plus 5 maestro fonts.

5. I really appreciate your determination to help. If I simply need to wait to upgrade to newer version, I'm resigned to my fate. I can perhaps limp along w/out the wizards (and HP) for now.

Ok, this is causing problems with the Default document  Let's see if disabling SIP and reinstalling gets the job one. Certain old app installers need to write to the Root directory—this is no longer allowed beginning with El Cap

You might want to print this page before continuing

Disable Norton. Shut down. Disable SIP by doing the following.

1. 1 Reboot the Mac and hold down Command + R keys simultaneously. This will boot OS X into Recovery Mode

2. When the “OS X Utilities” screen appears, pull down the ‘Utilities’ menu at the top of the screen instead, and choose “Terminal”

3. Type the following command into the terminal then hit return:

         csrutil disable; reboot

After rebooting trash Finale and the associated Preferences files.

Reinstall from your DVD and install the 2011c upgrade.

See if this fixes the Default document. If it does, see if it works on an old file. Do both before re-enabling SIP.

When done, re-enable SIP: Reboot the Mac again into Recovery Mode as directed above, but at the command line use the following syntax instead:

    csrutil enable; reboot

If the Default document behaves but the old file does not, let me know. This will be a different issue. Let's see what hapens.

OK. Disabled SIP, trashed Finale, reinstalled from DVD and installed update file.

Default doc works fine, no crash during testing (with HP off).  Able to add/edit at will (without wizards).  Playback works fine (HP off).

All my old docs crash when adding/editing, or using playback (HP off); seems to be random causes.

All docs crash if I use any wizards.

I'll ask a third time. How did you bring your old docs onto your new Mac?

My old/existing finale work files are stored and utilized from an external hard drive (formatted as NTFS) which is what I've used on the prior Mac and the current Mac.  Some have been copied from the external hard drive to the internal hard drive.

Hope that answers the question.

Finally... I suspected it was something like that.

Do Get Info on any of these files.  You will see that you do not have the correct admin privileges since that were not copied properly from your old Mac.

Run Get Info on the file that you were able to create and save. You will see differences.

Use the + box to add your Admin account with Read and Write privileges to the old files. If other accounts have to be changed, do so.

If you are unable to make the changes in Get Info, zip the file, then copy it to your drive. Unzipping it onto your drive should grant the proper remissions automatically.

Finale 2011 was released to run over OS 10.6.  I don't know why the wizards work for me and won't work for you. In any case, 2011 was released in late 2010 and is now 6 years old—there have been three paid upgrades since that time.

The Mac OS has been updated 6 times as well with fundamental changes under the hood. That Finale 2011 and 2012 work at all is not something that anyone can expect.

MakeMusic is offering an upgrade for $99 on any older version to Finale 25 on Monday. It's way past time. You have to stay current to be current. Many resellers have offered the upgrade for $119 since day one.

The Admin priviliges issue for old files applies to 10.6 as well as Sierra. Without fixing that, you can't edit these files in Finale 25 either. This applies to many file types including Microsoft Office and Adobe.

Worst case: open your old files, export as MusicXML. Create a new file and import the XML.

Stick a fork in me. I'm done.

Thanks so much for your incredible patience and work to try and get this resolved.  I'm amazed.

I'll be looking into the upgrade.  Best.
