I have both Mac and PC versions of Finale 25.3.  Forced to change from 2012 because of the MAC Sierra OS and boy, after spending several weeks using it daily, I'm getting more and more frustrated.

First, the Tempo tool.  Not the first time I complain about this one and apparently others are having tempo control issues as wel This tool used to be all in one and so easy to use.  Trying to get MIDI tool to produce the same flexibility is next to impossible and takes a lot of time.

Second, importing or scanning.  I'm still trying to find a good alternative to scan music and SmartScore was never that effective.  It was as much work to correct all the scanning errors as it was for me to just input the notes one by one.  The TIFF import always did a better job.  Luckily I still have an old Finale 2012 version that I can use for that.  Seems kind of silly though having to go to that much trouble.  I'm a composer arranger, so understand the copyright issue, but like William said in another post, if people are going to cheat, they'll find a way.  He had the best analogy that I have to share with you..."The solution of eliminating this function to prevent plagiarism is like eliminating the automobile to prevent drunk driving".  Well said.

Three, the look of the program.  I find the palette icons really hard to see and identify, even with my glasses on.  Lyrics icon looks like a lit candle top.  Before it was obviously a feather ink pen.  Very classy.  All the images are darker grey on lighter grey; no contrast.  I have to get really close to the screen to see them.  At least if the background was white and the images black they would be more visible.  Fine if your hell bend on a sterile no colour look.  Such a change that the themes are gone.  That's another great feature that was taken away.

In the world today, more and more companies design their software to accomodate clients who are challenged.  Finale as it is now, offers no possibility of adjusting the look to accomodate people who are visually challenged.  With 2012, you could adjust colors, backgrounds, palettes thereby making it easier to see and understand.

I'm not sure what happened when 2014 came in.  You had 2 years to improve things and here you are. Was there some kind of corporate take over?  It seems like that you lost good people who understood our needs better.    It feels now like it's all about business and cutting corners.

I started with Finale 2004 when I was teaching music in high school here in Canada.  I would upgrade regularly and never had any complaints about changes made from one version to the next.  It always seemed to get better and better, adding things on, so people never missed something they had gotten used to.  Then boom............2014 arrives and things start getting clawed back and taken away.  The design goes from pretty to, well....."butt ugly" and sterile.  I noticed several people are unhappy with it when I read other comments.

Oh well, some companies get it, and other's don't.  I thought you guys did but these last two versions just prove otherwise.

If I could go back, I would, but Mac's Sierra won't let me and that's the biggest problem of all.

Disappointed, I remain, Pierre

If you have version 25.3, you are an update ahead of me.

That said, I do not have a problem with the latest Finale versions. They are not perfect, but they are good. Although some have mentioned difficulty with the layout for some with vision problem, that does not affect me; and MM has made some efforts to improve matters since 2014. Perhaps they will make more as they continue to revise the product. Frankly, I don't care whether the UI is pretty so long as it is functional, and to me the program is easy to use--far more so than this forum's layout.

An upgrade to SmartScore X2 Pro from SS Lite is $199 US as it has been for ... how many years now?

I made the upgrade years ago for the very reasons you mention. I never bothered with .tiff and use MusicXML instead. Besides much greater accuracy, it also handles more expressions plus lyrics. You have no idea the improvement.

What is your time worth?

Here's a comparison chart with the upgrade pricing:

http://www.musitek.com/SSLiteUpgrade.html

Let me say that, when I did the update, I wasn't happy about spending the money for something that was "free". Then I used it to import a pdf file without printing and re-scanning. Wow — all the lyrics and chord symbols were there and I had to correct a couple of notes only. It worked so well and saved so much time that I kicked myself for not having made the upgrade earlier.

The instructions (like SS Lite) are way out of date and apply to PPCs. Scanning from withing the app doesn't work either. No problem—if you use Image Capture.app (part of the Mac OS since 10.6) to scan, SS X2 Pro works great. Since Finale 25 does not support direct import, I use MusicXML.

thanks for your responses.

@ Mike

I appreciate your suggesting SmartScore X2 and I'm sure it does a great job converting PDFs to Finale files.

You are most certainly correct when you say why pay $199 for something that used to be free.  What is my time worth?

I use Finale to compose and arranged songs for my choir.  We're a charity, so $199 - that's $266 CAD - is beyond what we can afford for a piece of software that basically only does one thing.  Scans PDFs into Finale.  Seems quite a bit pricy for such an exclusive program.   I usually purchase 5 to 6 new pieces per year, which I need to convert in order to create midi files for my members to practice with.  Not sure if that's worth the $266.

Nuff said.  Your response is appreciated and I did check out the link.

Have a super day

Pierre

If you only complained that it was no longer available, that would be one thing—you can still use the version you have (assuming your old version is 2011—2014.5). Import, save and open the file in 25.

But you also complained about the time and amount of correction that SS Lite takes—and I agree 100%. Frankly, SmartScore Lite is so bad that it makes you not want to try X2 Pro. It's your time that is being wasted, not mine.

Church choir and praise bands were my bread and butter for over 40 years. I would download the demo. You may find the money after you see how well it works. I bit that bullet 4 years ago so I don't care that it was dropped in Finale 25 (this was widely announced, BTW).

The scanning instructions that assume a PPC and are now 9 years out of date—scanning from within the app crashes. Ignore those and use Apple's Image Capture.app to scan.
