The end of Finale is terrible news. it's gone cost us a lot money and hours and hours of time.

That being said I'm surprised that they push Dorico. $149 is a nice discount but I won't be surprised if Sibelius comes with a nice offer too. There are a lot of us and once we're in we stay in. That's one of the reasons we're still out here.

The only thing they offer is XML ex/im-port. That's what all programs can do. If a company 'want's us' make a better offer. How about the ability to import Finale files without XML so you don't have to worry about expiring licenses, not supported OS upgrades, etc.

And make the cross grade free! We'll pay the next upgrade. When does a program like Dorico such an opportunity to welcome so many new users? Maybe the president of Finale can sell his car to pay for it ;-) ?

Good luck with that.

MusicXML 4 exported from Finale imports/exports pretty well into the latest version of Sibelius Ultimate if the free Dolet 8 plug-in is installed.

https://www.musicxml.com/dolet-plugin/dolet-plugin-for-sibelius/

Dorico's MusicXML 4 import is relatively painless though I can't say the same for export. Most other apps, select MusicXML 3.0 for best results.

The current version of MuseScore 4.3.2 has improved in this regard re xml 4 (ok, that Edwin text/lyric font—yech) and version 5 (whenever that happens) has promised to actually be good. You want free? It's there for you. Muse Group's stated goal is to dominate all aspects of the music industry—yes, really, that's why they bought Hal Leonard Publishing nine months ago—and the Borg is waiting to assimilate you.

Expect font issues no matter what path you chose, especially if you used any 3rd party fonts in Finale.

Thanks for the answer.

I've got MuseScore. Mainly use it to scan pdf's and then via xml import it into the trusted environment of Finale.

It doesn't have to be free. But the transition of all the .mus files is going to cost me weeks. Not the exporting. I understand that's a batch job. Wake up in the morning and see what your computer has done. But the importing, and being the lay-out nerd I am, make it look right again will take forever.

So I'm more or less insulted by offering me a few hundred dollars discount. As if that makes up for the hours I'm going to spent on learning a new program and ex/importing al the stuff.

Probably I'll just keep my back up MacBook Air 2016 and treat it with respect like my Mac Book Pro 2010 with its superdrive.
