Please help me to make sure that I'm understanding all of this.

I don't own any version of Finale.  I've been a PrintMusic owner & user for many years.  I bought every upgrade of PrintMusic and would have bought more if any upgrades had come out in the past 10 years.  I sing in our church's choir & I can recognize notes on a page but I can't read music to hear a song in my head.  So, I've used PrintMusic for all of these years to scan our sheet music into my PC so that I can play them back to practice the songs.  I have well over 1,000 .musx files that I've created.  I keep the files because we'll reuse some of the songs every few years.

My understanding of this transition is that I'll pay the $150 to upgrade to Dorico Pro v5 and I'll download (& maybe have to install) Finale v27 so that I can use MusicXML 4.0 to export my files to a format that works with Dorico Pro.  Then I'll be able to play back all of those songs so that I can practice them in Dorico Pro.  And then, in the future, I can scan any new sheet music into Dorico Pro and play it back like I've always done previously in PrintMusic.

It sounds like Dorico Pro is overkill for what I need, just like Finale itself was in the past, but hopefully it will do what I need to practice my choir music.  Am I misunderstanding anything here?

Thanks,

GWGuen

You could buy Dorico Elements, which is the "cut-down", cheaper version. That's normally $99, though there is currently a 50% sale on all Steinberg products.

However, while the Pro version certainly has some features that you'll never use, you may find that Elements can't do some things that you'd really need. There's a comparison page of features on the Steinberg website. Elements is fine, but it doesn't offer some levels of customization and configuration.

If you want to upgrade from Elements to Pro at a later date, you'll have to pay a lot more. There's a 60-day demo, so you've got a while to assess what your needs are.

Here are the offers:

For a limited time, users of any version of Finale or PrintMusic can purchase Dorico Pro – the highest tier of the product – for just $149 (retail price $579).

  1. Finale v27 to be included with Dorico Pro crossgrades: We are currently working on a solution for all customers who have purchased or intend to purchase a Dorico Pro crossgrade to be able to download Finale v27. This will ensure that you can export your Finale files using MusicXML 4.0, the most robust version of MusicXML available. Thank you for your patience, we will provide more information soon.

  1.  Finale authorization will remain available for the foreseeable future: Please note that future OS changes can still impact your ability to use Finale on new devices.

Thank you, gentlemen, for your comments.  I decided that it was better to go ahead and get the Dorico Pro crossgrade with Finale v27.  It's certainly more than I'll ever need but I prefer that than to get the Elements version and find out later that I need more than that.  I've already downloaded both products.  I haven't installed them yet but I'll do that tomorrow evening.  Thanks, again!
