I've started composing a piece, and at first, there were a good amount of measures per page. Now, all of a sudden, out of nowhere, Finale decided to have one measure per page. I've tried fitting music with the page layout tool, but I haven't finished the composition yet, so I'd be guessing how many measures I want per page. So, when I do that, it doesn't work out the way I want it to. Is there any way to get more measures on each page? Please let me know when you have the chance. Much appreciated. I am using Windows 10, Finale 2003.

… Windows 10, Finale 2003 …

I am afraid I do not remember much about Finale 2003.

Some ideas - based on later Finale versions (things were perhaps different in Finale 2003):

a) Indeed something can be done with the Page Layout Tool - to correct already existing pages.

b) … Now, all of a sudden, out of nowhere, Finale decided to have one measure per page …

I suspect that the culprit is the document’s default formatting for new pages/systems.

NB: The default formatting for new pages/systems is a document specific setting (not a program specific setting).

In later Finale versions:

Document menu > Page Format > Score…

However, in earlier Finale versions (perhaps also in Finale 2003) the Document menu was called the Options menu.

Try this:

Options menu > Page Format > Score…

You can correct the default formatting settings - and new pages/systems will be formatted with the corrected settings.

To update already existing pages with the corrected settings, use the Page Layout menu command Redefine Pages:

Page Layout menu > Redefine Pages > …

Warning:

In the Page Layout menu there is a command called

Update Page Layout for Score

What it does:

When you use the Page Layout Tool to edit one specific page/system, Finale will assume that you need all new pages/systems formatted accordingly, and update the document’s default formatting for new pages/systems.

NB:

Update Page Layout for Score

is a program specific setting.

If you close the document, and open another document, then “Update Page Layout for Score” will still be on.

My advice:

Do not keep

“Update Page Layout for Score”

on all the time.

Toggle it on when you need it, and toggle it off as soon as you do not need it anymore.

First, I would suggest using scroll view for composing, and not worry about layout until much later.

Having said that, use the Fit Music (or whatever it was called in 2003) command to specify a number of measures per staff.

You could also post your composition so we can look under the hood, and find out why things went wonky. You can't post a Finale file on the Finale forum, so put it in Dropbox or something similar, and post the link.
