I am using Finale 2008.  I created a great percussion part where there are several instruments but their staves drop out if there are just rests.  Well, I tried this same approach for a 2nd Violin part (where a few measures throughout it breaks into two, and sometimes threes staves).  I went to the Staff tool, hit Select All (on that 2nd Violin part) and selected the multimeasure rests, 'create' button.  Funny that it worked for percussion, but it does absolutely nothing on the violin part.  What I'm trying to achieve is a single-line part that occasionally breaks into two or three staves when needed.  I have already 'created' a part made up of those three staves from the score.  Like I said, this worked nicely with the percussion........  What am I missing??

I do not understand why creating multimeasure rests should hide empty staves, and I can not explain why it “worked for percussion”.

To hide empty staves:

Staff Tool.

Select All.

Staff menu > Hide Empty Staves

You can also hide empty staves with a staff style.

Nope.  Don't forget, this is Finale 2008.  Since there is nothing specifically marked 'menu' I'm assuming you mean the Staff drop-down panel.  Upon doing so, there is no "Hide Empty Staves" anywhere.  By the way, if you go through staff styles, you can check 'Hide Staff' but that removes the entire staff whether or not it has anything in it.

I went to the Page Layout Tool and then, Optimize Staff Systems.  Finally, I found "Hide Empty Staves".  This worked.

Oops! Sorry!

I forgot that you are using Finale 2008.

Indeed “optimization” is the way things are done in Finale 2008.
