Encountered a strange phenomenon yesterday: I don't use play back options that regular so only now I noticed that in two new scores it is not possible to change tempo with the Play Back control bar. Duration of notes and tempo setting doesn't seem to respond in any way and the sounding tempo doesn't match the tempo indication of the score either. In older scores I cán change tempo settings though. Btw: I have Human Playback settings Midi Data tab set to 'incorporate data' as older posts suggest.

Could it have anything to do with the fact that in the new scores I used an old score as a starting point? I just deleted the content and started writing new note content, it often works easier for me that way. Anyone familiar with this problem?
Thanks!

Three things control the tempo in Finale:

MIDI Tool (= the recorded tempo changes)

Expression Tool (= the expression tempo changes)

Playback Controls

And they work in a hierarchical fashion.

The tempo in the Playback Controls is overridden by an Expression that sets a tempo.

This is overridden by the MIDI Tool, which is at the top of the "Tempo Hierarchy".

From your description it sounds like your document contains some recorded tempo changes (possibly added with Apply Human Playback).

Something to try (perhaps on a backup copy):

Selection Tool.

Select All.

Edit menu > Clear Selected Items…

In the dialog box Clear Selected Items, de-select everything, and select only Tempo Changes.

@Peter: thanks for your reply. I did that but still not possible to change tempo, very strange.... Are there any other possible settings I could try?

Michel Havenith,

If you have cleared the Recorded Tempo Changes, then the culprit must be an expression.

Use “Clear Selected Items” to clear all expressions (from a backup copy), and see whether that helps.

Hi Peter,

It worked when I cleared 'Markings - Expressions: Tempo Marks, etc.'. I experimented a bit further and noticed that there's a problem with the tempo marking (it was: quarter = 69). As soon as I deleted it I could control tempo again.
Thanks!
