I am finding Notepad to be very frustrating to use:

  1. Several features just don't work at all, following the manual exactly.
  2. Does crazy stuff sometimes when adding in music, too complicated to explain
  3. Useful features not supported, have to upgrade is the standard answer

I understand this is FREE software. I don't need nor can afford Finale. I just started piano lessons 2 years ago as a hobby, my teacher has us write and play piece at our yearly recital. I just want to easily and quickly get my piece in software quickly so I can stay focused on creating versus fighting software. So far writing my music by hand is about 10X faster. I have learned and used many different types of software in my engineering career.  This has to be one of my worst experiences.

Similar to other free software I have used, the business purpose is to get me started quickly in the hopes that I trade up to a more powerful version. Unfortunately my Notepad experience is not enticing me to buy Finale at all. Why would I believe that everything will be great once I move on to Finale?  All I am going to do after my Notepad experience is run to something else.

NotePad is worth what you paid for it. If you want to do anything more than "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" you will need a more powerful program. However, it's quite possible that you just need to learn more about the program.

What features "don't work at all?"

Post a picture of your handwritten piece. We will easily tell you if you can do it in NotePad, or not. However, EVERY notation program has a learning curve.

What MikeR said. Also let us know your OS, preferably by editing your profile—that way you don't have to include it every time you post.

Notepad has no support from MM, of course. This us a User forum and those of us with Community Expert below our names are users like you, not employees of MM. We just post a lot and often seem to know what we're doing.
