I am using Finale 2008.  I'm putting the finishing touches on a full orchestral score.  Everything looks good, except the instrument names do not appear on the individual parts.  And, I do NOT want the name to appear on every line (staff).  This is such a basic need....Why is this so elusive in 2008?  Anyway, help!

You need to create a text box with the part/score name insert to do this. Specific instructions on how to do this can be found in the manual, look up "part names in linked parts".

… I do NOT want the name to appear on every line (staff) …

An idea:

Staff Tool.

Double-click the staff.

In the Staff Attributes, in the pane Items to Display, is the option

Staff Name in Parts

selected or de-selected?

Remember, this is in 2008.   Jeff:  That's what I tried, initially.  I was working on a bassoon part.  I used the text box to put in 'Bassoons 1 & 2'.   The next day, while working on a trombone part, I saw the 'Bassoons 1 & 2' in the top left corner.  I tried other parts.... All had 'Bassoons 1 & 2'.

Peter:  I had also looked at this.  All show this option is NOT selected.  When it IS selected, the individual name will appear.  The problem is that it shows up over and over (the name shows up to the left of every line).   As I said, I do NOT want the name to appear on every staff.  This was probably made easier in later versions.

The staff name that shows up on every system (except on the first system), is the so called “Abbr. Staff Name”.

If I understand you correctly, you need the Abbr. Staff Name in the score, but not in the linked parts, right?

Staff styles can be different between score and parts.

You can apply a staff style to both the score and the part, or apply the staff style only to the Current Part/Score.

If a staff style has been applied to both score and part(s), you can clear the staff style from both of them, or only from the score, or only from the part(s).

Use a custom staff style to make the Abbr. Staff Name “empty” in the part, but displaying in the score.

Alan,

Actually, you didn't read my post carefully enough. You need to use a text box with the "PART/SCORE NAME INSERT". When seeing that this insert is being used, Finale will insert the correct part name on each part. It will not put the same name on all parts. If you look it up in the manual it'll give you further information.

Jeffrey Turner is right. You should be able to do this using the text insert "Part/Score Name" in Fin2008, and if "Staff Name in Parts" is not selected, I'm not sure why you are seeing them on each staff in the parts. Also, I'm not sure how you setup the score. In Fin2008a, I used the wizard and chose a couple instruments and everything loads "ideally." Staff names do not show in parts, and the "Part/Score Name" appears at the top-left of the page in all parts and score appropriately via the text insert.

Did you by chance change the score colors from program options? If not, what color is the staff names: red or blue?

Jeffrey, it worked.  I don't have the manual; so, it took me awhile to figure how to activate "insert".  I'm assuming this works with page numbers, too.  Thank you!
