I have a document from 2008 where I substituted the raised and lowered natural, flat, sharp signs for double flats, double sharps, courtesy etc.  I tried to pull it up in my new finale, but I can't find where these symbols are. Please help me find those symbols in the newest finale 25.5.0.259 or in that old doc so I could use it as a template for more work.

thank you, Ellen

Hi Mike,

What I am looking for is not there...I looked under accidentals and other notation.  Below is what I need.

I’m,still confused. You want the quarter up and quarter down characters for sharp, flat and natural?

Engraver Font Extras font; look in the percussion section.

yes.  We had gotten these symbols before in a 2007 Finale version. When I opened that file in the current version, I couldn't find them. I was hoping that they'd be saved through the versions, or the new version would have them.

As I said: Engraver Font Extras font; Percussion subsection. They are all there.

Ellen, have you checked which font you originally used for the quarter tone accidentals? Engraver Font Extras is possible, but there are many other fonts that could have been used (see for example https://elbsound.studio/quarter-tone-accidentals.php ).

I assume that you have used Finale's accidental replacement tool: so to check which original font was used go to Tools->Advanced Tools->Special Tools->Accidental Mover. Then double click on the accidental which doesn't show up correctly and look into the font selection box ("Set Font").

Hi Mike

I went in and found the listings for these engraver fonts, but I'm not able to produce them for some reason... I assume I have to go to the expression tool, click on the note I want to affix the quarter tone marking too, then go to create expression. But since using the "+" sign requires using the shift key, I'm really confused... Sorry if this is really basic.

Lawrence Axelrod,

Have you tried Finale’s dialog box Symbol Selection?

Text menu > Inserts > Symbol…

By The Way:

The "standard” way of creating quarter-tone accidentals uses the Key Signature Tool where you create a new (special) key signature, which divides the octave into 24 steps.

But if you only need a few quarter-tone accidentals in a document that otherwise uses the traditional 12-step division of the octave, then I suppose that it is simpler to just add the (few) quarter-tone accidentals with the Expression Tool.

You could also use the Articulation Tool.
