I recently used the Select: Apply Alternate Notation: X-Noteheads command in a score. As you see in the picture, I am given several choices for the type of alternate notation I'd like to use.

However, in the score I am working on now, I am only given four options for alternate notation when I follow the exact same procedure. I NEED my "X-Noteheads"! Very frustrated. What am I doing wrong here?

It's because those four staff styles are all that come with PrintMusic. The first document was created by someone using the full Finale, or with a template from that program.

In the old days, a workaround to get a few extra features for PM was to download the Finale demo, and copy the templates.

OK, so I just need to open this in my older (full) copy of Finale, and then, hopefully, then bring it back here? I guess I DID do that with the one score, so I'll give that a shot - thank you!

Well, it's not quite that simple. If your Finale version is 2012, you will have to export the PM file in 2012 format. (File > Export > Finale 2012.) If Finale is older than that, export it as Music XML, and, in Finale, File > Import > XML.

Kirk Hanser,

Staff styles are document specific.

If a certain document contains the staff styles, you need, consider making a copy of that document.

In the copy, clear all the measures, and use that (now empty) document as a template for new documents.

With your copy of (full) Finale 2012 you can create documents with custom staff styles.

PrintMusic 2014 can open such Finale 2012 documents, and use the staff styles.

PrintMusic just can not itself create custom staff styles.

By The Way:

MakeMusic does not any longer develop PrintMusic.

You might consider an upgrade to the “full Finale”.
