Has the printing bug with some Brother printers on Mac been fixed in Finale 26? On some Brother printers in Mac, printing is about 70% gray, not black. I will download the trial version. Correcting this printing bug in Finale 26 will be my sole criterion on whether or not I upgrade. I'm hoping for the best.

Not enough information:

Laser or inkjet?

What model printer?

What drivers are you using?

How are you printing?

My MFC-J6935DW inkjet prints great using the CUPS drivers from the Brother site—the Apple AirPrint drivers work but cannot access the full functionality of my machine.

I have heard of some major issues with certain older Brother laser printers.

Try the Graphics export as a PDF, and see if that prints pure black.

Hi, Mike and Mike.

Mike Halloran: I believe we may have gone through this in another forum. Nevertheless, I'm using a Brother MFC-L2740DW laser all-in-one. I bought it three years ago new. I'm using the latest MacOS CUPS driver (it's version 2.2.9, upgraded with MacOS Mojave). I've tried all manor of other available drivers.

Mike Rosen: Your suggestion is my workaround. I export to PDF via the graphics tool. This is also the workaround that MM suggested, after weeks of trying various fixes and changes. I do applaud their tech people for sticking with me on this problem and giving it their best to solve it. Our exchanges, almost daily and several times a day, went on for almost a month. MM concluded that it is a bug in Finale, They told me it was referred to the developers. MM also suggested my printing in Finale 2014.5.

Twice I've asked MM via my ticket on this bug if this problem is fixed in Finale 26. Twice the answer was to check the blog. That evasiveness is foreboding. That's why I thought I'd ask again here. Nevertheless, I will try Finale 26. If the problem is solved, I'll upgrade. If it's not, I won't upgrade.

Ahhh, that was you.

For those wondering what this is about, I'll try to be brief: With Finale 25, the Mac version does not print true black, only grey scale. Whether you notice this or not depends on your printer, drivers and how observant you are. With a few Brother laser printers, the difference is huge. The workaround is as stated above through the graphics menu.

MakeMusic has never acknowledged this but, since it does not appear to affect Win users, I agree that it's a bug and should have been fixed two years ago. Let's hope it's done in 26.

It's not fixed, sadly, in v26, at least not fixed in High Sierra. We'll still have to use export graphic as PDF workaround.

Do you also have a Brother laser printer or is it something else?

I also have a Brother laser printer which was how I noticed the problem back in v25. But even still, it's the PDF that has the issue. If you inspect the colors in a PDF made via the usual print method, it isn't a true black. The export graphic method works fine, and same inspection shows it's a true black, but still wish this had been fixed. I may upgrade to Mojave to see if that helps before submitting this issue (again) to support.

After going through about a month of back-and-forth with MM on this problem, testing various ideas with no solution, I was told, "I will be forwarding this information (and testing results) to our Development team for further vetting and disposition." Based on my experience, I'm not holding my breath for a solution. That was last May. I do strongly encourage you to submit another ticket on this problem.

Yea, that's well known. I was wondering if your print quality was as bad as Art's.

I won't be going to 26 till I get another Mac (this month, perhaps?) so I won't know till then. My Brother gives the same near black, dark grey as my HP.
