Is there a way to Alphabetize the Misc. and Expressive Text list in Finale 2012 or does it have to be done by hand pushing the arrow key for each individual expression added? With a large list it is time consuming to find the expression I'm looking for.

Unfortunately no, sorry.

You can submit a feature request.

The more users (= Finale serial numbers) that request an “expression sorter”, the higher priority the feature will get during the development of future Finale versions.

By The Way:

You mention the Misc. category.

I personally see the Misc. category as the “non category” category, and I do not create expressions in the Misc. category.

Rather than “create a large number of Misc. category expressions” I create new expression categories, and keep the new expressions in those new categories.

This helps me keep the expressions organized.

When an expression is selected in the Expression Selection, you can reset its settings to the category’s (default) settings for Fonts or Positioning, or both.

To create a new expression category, duplicate an existing category*), and edit the duplicate - with a Name, and with settings for Fonts & Positioning.

*) It does matter what category you duplicate, since there are two different category types:

- categories with a Score List (= Tempo Marks, Tempo Alterations, Rehearsal Marks),

- categories without a Score List (= Dynamics, Expressive Text, Technique Text).

Furthermore, the Tempo Marks category has (as the only category) font settings for three fonts:

Text Font, Music Font, Number Font

And the Rehearsal Marks category supports (as the only category) Auto-Sequencing Style rehearsal marks.

If you move an Auto-Sequencing Style expression to a category that does not support Auto-Sequencing Style, then the expression’s Auto-Sequencing Style will no longer work.

Peter - that is a great description of expression category differences... thanks!

I would add that using multiple categories (not the Misc. category) also allows the user to have different baseline offsets (or different fonts) for expression positioning. For example, you could have two dynamics categories - both containing similar markings - one with baselines and offsets for winds/strings, and another for percussion, piano, etc... and even a third baseline setting for a dynamics category to be used when dynamics are combined with hairpins.

I have a "duplicate" set of expressions with altered baselines for singers called "Dynamics Above."

Another remark : AFAIK, an expression library can retain a newly created category (for loading it in another document) only if the new category differs from the other ones (fonts, positioning,...). Apparently, if all the parameters are identical to the "source" category (from which it is derived as a duplicate), Finale doesn't "see" a new category.

P.S. : For sorting expressions, the full version TGTools plug-in has (limited) capacities (Miscellaneous -> Text expression sorter).

I requested this years ago in addition to a search function but it has not been implemented yet. I would rely on a search function most of the time. Expressions can be custom-named (to deal with graphical or notation expressions) and searched by that custom-name. This would help tremendously when there are a hundred or more custom expressions.
