I'm based in NYC and you guys are in Colorado.  Your store keeps insisting on adding sales tax to my order.  Can you please fix this?

I believe it's the law. MM will forward the collected tax to New York state. Otherwise, it would be your responsibility to report and pay it.

Do a quick Google on <paying sales tax on out of state purchase>

I do pay my sales tax on out of state purchases, so I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you aren't trying to imply that I don't.  I save my receipts and claim everything, and have.  And I have a system for it.

The law that was enacted only covers certain states at the moment and NY isn't one of them.  I would have preferred the law to cover either all or none at once and not do it piecemeal because I really don't want to start keeping track of who collected sales tax and who didn't from out of state purchases because it makes my job harder on my end.

The bottom line is, I'm based in NYC and you guys are in Colorado.  Your store keeps insisting on adding sales tax to my order.  Can you please fix this?

You should give me the benefit of the doubt. I gave it to you.

But to ensure that an MM staffer sees your request soonest, open a support ticket with the tab atthe top of the page. This is primarily a user forum.

Frank,

I'm not sure who you think "you guys" are, but unless labeled otherwise in green (like David Cusick's account), most participants on this forum (such as Mike and myself) are users, not MakeMusic employees.

As MikeR has suggested, the rules on sales tax, how it's collected and by whom vary state to state — and they are changing.

A number of users from the EU have been complaining that they are hit by a "USA Sales Tax" which, as we know, does not exist (the workaround is to purchase from the authorized resellers in their countries).

There may be a problem with the MM web site in this regards. You will have to ask MakeMusic directly through the Send a request link at the top of the page. Being that this is the weekend, don't expect an answer before Monday.

Unless someone weighs from MM in, none of us will know the answer. As Adrian has stated, this is a Users board.

Hi Frank, If you feel that you are being charged tax in error, please feel free to contact us directly using Submit a Request option. For some clarification on this, the sales tax for online purchases is based off of the laws for the address and location of the purchaser, not the retailer. EU customers are seeing the VAT added to their purchases through our store. They may not have seen this in the past as some laws around this have changed fairly recently.

In both cases, we partner with a third-party company that specializes in tax collection for online retailers. They do this through our online store for us to make sure that the tax is collected and distributed correctly and accurately.

Good to know. Thanks, Dave. I'll remember that and just update from the MM website in the future. It shouldn't be necessary to resort to local resellers.
