Alpha note names and transposing instruments

Finale 2017 - V. 25

Hi,

My band colleague asked me a question and I have no clue since I teach strings (she's new to Finale and I've been using it for years). She created a score of Jingle Bells for her 5th graders. When she applied alpha note names, every instrument was at concert pitch. She wants the alpha note names to be in each instrument's own note names. How does she do that?

I'm not sure she can do that. The Alpha notes are related to their staff position. I don't think you can, for example, have F show up on the second staff line, if that's where it would go for a transposed instrument.

Solfege does shift with the transposition, if that would be any help to her. It has a moveable Do, where the Alpha Notes, don't.

And it's just my opinion, of course, but by fifth grade, shouldn't they be able to read the staff without note names?

I am attempting to create solfege teaching materials for Teachers thrown into a music classroom from other fields, etc. I have used Solfege fonts before (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6GVYiBAJMW0erqtLgQU9EGqbIFqqef7p )and know how to start a file with Finale's Solfege Templates but am currently copying and pasting from an Vaccai Choral arrangement I started with standard notation. I started in band as a Junior in high school, though I had sung in choirs since age 5 and taken a year of piano. My intent is to develop an audio-visual curriculum teachers(and others) from out of field may utilize for Gen. Music, Chorus and Hopefully Band, then Strings. So I copy from this file:

Paste into a Solfege Template file and Voila:

It looks as though the solfege template is using a different default music font. Check both docs to see what fonts are involved.

By your words “the accompaniment” you mean the Grand Staff at the bottom - right?

Your screen shot shows that you applied a staff style, to get Finale AlphaNotes Solfege - right?

Just clear the staff style from the two staves in the Grand Staff - and it is back to regular notation.

Yes Peter, the Grand Staff should be in standard notation, will try clearing the staff style in those two staves,

Will have to experiment some more, so far, Grand Staff notes remain in solfege.
